Jonboym, it appears that there is something wrong with one of your report files or there is content in one of them that is causing combat reporter to fail. My suggestion is that you move the more recent files one at a time to a new directory until it starts working again, then send me the file that is failing and I will try to figure out what is going on.

would it be technically feasible to link the unit ID and name, so that a history can be generated for lcus, plane, sub, ships? Tracker already follows the unit, wouldn't it be great if the tracker could extract or link up with the combat reporter, and generate a unit turn/action narrative? Pipe dream but we could all follow our own little Hibikis [:)]

Thanks for your reply. On a hunch I tried reinstalling combat reporter by deleting the files and copying them back in from the zip and after setting up again it worked. So seems a Combat Reporter file that had somehow been modified was causing the issue somehow.

I would love to be able to create a history and also to track ship/unit/air movements in CR. I have tried to get Matrix to share the interface to the game with me so I can build in that capability, but for some reason they won't do it. I guess I'm not special enough. As for interfacing to Tracker, I believe it will export data that could be read into Reporter.

It seems like a clunky interface, which is why I haven't pursued it. I really want to be able to read the game files and report off them. Who knows, maybe someone who has friends at Matrix can convince them that CR is a good tool that adds value to the game and then they will share their interface.

Cheers,

Yeah, Joe tried to get something going with Matrix, but was not successful. I was very disappointed.

I am trying to install, but I am unable to enter a valid date. I have tried to type the date as well as using the calendar. I have Java1.6 and have looked up the dates of save games. I would be very grateful if someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.

Correction: I have Java 6 update 27. Can this be the reason the date is invalid? I have been trying to find Java 1.6 without success.

No special folder required to run the program, put it anywhere you like.

The Java version should not matter. I am running the latest and it seems to run fine for me. Please let me know if you are getting any specific errors.

Any suggestion why I am unable to set the monitor date? Everything works according to the instructions to start with. After entering the directories I try to enter a date (one month back) manually, click "save" and get the message "The monitor start date must be set...." I press OK and then "select date/time" and get the message "Invalid date/time..." I press OK and get the calendar where I select the date by clicking there and then OK. Then I press "save" and get the message "The monitor start date must be set...", so I am back where I started.

Clearly I am doing some simple mistake since I now have tried it on three computers with the same result. I would really like to use this tool, so I am grateful for any help.

Has there been any thought to add a keyword search? Say I want to see where the TK Amato Maru ran into the TK Ayayuki Maru. I would like to do a search for Amato and see when and where it happened.

Good suggestion. I'm considering updating Combat Reporter this year, so I'll keep that in mind.

To be honest the combat reports are the last thing I'm interested in because I can see them in full detail in the game and for every interesting combat I do that, the real treasure in this program is making the OpsReport and the SigIntReport useful(where the game totally fails to do this).

What suggest is a way of merging the OpsReports and the SigIntReports for a time period so the player has a "track" he can follow.
Lets take the radio reports, seeing one heavy traffic somewhere in the Pacific isn't much worth but seeing that there are spots of heavy radio traffic running down from Japan to New Guinea over the last 2-3 weeks makes you think "Oh there is something going to happen, KB moving South?", similar case with the Ops reports, seeing the daily loss of an airgroup isn't worth much but seeing that a unit suffered losses over the last week maybe even daily makes you think "There is something wrong I have to check."

And of course a database would be great, often you get info of "XY being stationed in Japan", "XY is planning attack for Port Morsesby", "XY is moving in a ship to Truk" and if these pieces of info could be collected into a database it could give the player a complete picture of what the enemy is up to.

So any chance the Reporter could be moved into this direction?

Tracker has several of these capabilities already ... have you looked there?

Indeed, haven't checked what the tracker can do there for a long time.
But I use the tracker without map to not slow it down as it already has enough to handle and the combat reporter with the jump function from a message to the map is really helpful.

These are good ideas. Adding a database will add complexity to the tool, but is definitely something I have considered. I would like some help designing this kind of feature, so if you are willing to help define and design how it should work, I will look at it. Defining and designing would mean a collaboration of screen shots and functionality.

I also want to add sightings and other items of interest to the map as well as summarized information about recent combat events, etc.
