So how did you control the North Atlantic?  U boats or surface fleet?

US should've done a Torch in Salonika  [X(].

I guess if the CP successfully contest the North Atlantic, the US won't be able to ship troops anywhere.

(Maybe worth Frank thinking about this a bit - presumably the US should still be able to ship to the mid-east & then thru the Med if the Allies control it?)

Nice AAR, and it seems fairly plausible - except maybe for the CP success in the Atlantic.

I've also noticed the AI completely abandoning key cities on the defence, when it didn't seem necessary to do so. Another thing which I guess might be worth tweaking.

I built an extra two U-boats in 1914 and then my four U-boat fleet ripped the heart out of British shipping. I'm not sure about this but I think the U-boat arm had a major impact on the war. Britain's morale went to "Strong" without the BEF even firing a shot, that implies starvation on the home front.

I think by 1918 Britain's naval asset store must have been very low, as the Royal Navy seemed to be in port a lot.

That said - I did comment about the North Atlantic being my hands once but that was only a blip really, noted for being unusual, most of the time the Entente ruled the waves in this game.

Re. Salonika - there was a huge Brit force there at one point that could have done me some damage. But the British AI seems to have a tendency to zip troops around constantly. The Ottomans attack Egypt - suddenly 10 Brits show up. The Ottomans pause - next turn Egypt is empty.
I took Cairo and Salonika both because the British decided inexplicably to abandon it. And after taking them the Brits came back!

Too late, guys.

It was only the British doing this, I'm not sure how the AI works but it seems to be an issue specific to them.

i've never played the TE side, but shouldn't there be convoys to defeat the UBoats later in the war?  Is this an option in R & D?

ASW is an option for R&D. Later in the war my U-boats were getting hammered so I assume the British/US were researching it.

They just werent being hammered enough. [;)]

One thing that struck me in this game - it wasn't until the beginning of 1919 that I thought I was actually winning the war.  And there were a lot of offensives made purely on the basis of aerial recon telling me that there was far less defence than I assumed.

Looking back at the AAR a few days later, I'm struck by how pessimism reigns until 1919, and yet, when considering the course of the game, it looks like 1917, when I was at the height of my woes, was the year that won it for the Central Powers.  I guess the lesson to be learned is - when you are being pushed back on the Western Front and German cities are falling to the enemy despite your best efforts, and it looks like things are surely going to result in a loss - be cool, stay slinky, as the attacker will be suffering far more and sucking up more industrial potential than the defender ever will be.
