I am enjoying HoI3, it has great potential for the type of game that it is. Though currently it suffers from terrible performance issues, a few game breaking bugs and a slightly insane diplomatic balance that (in my game) had the USA and the Swiss in the Allies before the outbreak of war in Europe!

Most of this will be resolved I'm sure by patches over the next 12 months. But unless you are a fan of the series I probably wouldn't recommend it as it stands.

There's always TOAW. Great land model but the naval and production model is lacking greatly.

The arrows and text were added using mspaint; something we'll probably use to draw up plans for MWiF to send to our allies. There is no global scenario, but a fairly good European one. The lack of an effective naval model renders this pacific scenario unplayable. It was fun up until my pearl harbor attack, where my planes attacked their own ships(naval seppuku?). I've stopped playing out of extreme frustration over 'The Operational Art of War's' flaws though for the ground scenarios(and it is completely editable with hundreds spanning ancient to today) it is enjoyable. Note that there is fog of war rendering units such as guerrillas and commandoes quite difficult to see incertain terrain.

I think best option is War Plan Orange or WWI (if you can live with atrocious interface). WWII games are so boring.[:D]

WPO or WWI are perfect because airforce is nearly non-existent. It takes quite a lot of time to move somewhere/destroy something.

And you need game with looooong playing time - just what WPO/WWI guarantee in abundance. WIF scheduled release is November, but... I'm not sure about Nov this year![:'(]

Anybody play Hearts of Iron 3 yet? Is it worth the effort?

Cheers

John

I suggest try to buy one of the older HoI : Heart of Iron the first one or Heart of Iron II with the expansion I was able to get it at 8.42$ on Amazon. A lot of players like it, however I did try it one evening than never played again.

Personally I am annoyed all the game by messages from minor countries who want to trade iron for resources etc. The feeling of war or combat is rather not there. I mean there are battles a lot, but I don't want the way it's handled, hard to explain, don't know, reports are scarse, it's not turned based except you can pause the game anytime, you don't have a lof of control on the battles. It's a game where you have to do a lot of micromanagement for your research, and manage your trade(s) is rather important. You might like it it's a matter of personal taste.

As for the latest version, they have a lot of patches to do it seems.

to be more fun and a better challenge. The air units are differentiated into fighter, tac, strategic the AI is better and I absolutely LOVED the convoy system (the convoys are valued as production points, each loss destroys one and the Brits get the full value to spend immediatly upon their arrival in Britain). It really hurts the German when 30 point convoys arrive unmolested.
And also when 100+ points convoy arrives in Murmansk unmolested... [:D] But to put things in perspective, in that game an armoured corps costs 80 points.
True but the convoys are numerous and increase in number and size as the war goes on. A constant 30 point bump is VERY nice for the Brits and another armored division every 3rd turn is sweet for the Russians. It makes the German pay attention to the convoy war.

I wish this was the game they made a improved version of.
