A) Iowa class. I like the lines and the bow.
B) The Admiral Hipper. Typical clean German design and.
C) DD´s are ugle by definition but if neccesary i´d go for the Mutsuki
D) CV´s its the same as DD´s, they can impress but not enchant. Illustrious class maybe...
E) ACV Archer definitely. I would never want to sit on that "carriers" island during an attack.

It doesn't exactly fit the categories here (like the Alaska), but I've always found the Graf Spee had an aesthetic place in my heart. It just 'looks right' and bristles with lots of AAA above decks. As the first model that I ever made, it might have something to do with my opinion. As Sade says, 'it's never as good as the first time'...[;)]

cv: Lexington/Saratoga (very graceful even with the big stack)

I was thinking about the Fuso and Yamashiro but went with the Hood. There is something about the pagoda's. [:)]

(e) Scharnhorst (with swept funnel). beautiful yet purposeful - just a shame about those rubbish 11-inchers.

Those 11-inchers were anything but rubbish, amazing performance from such a small caliber.
Warspite1

Oh dear....The reference to the 11-inchers being rubbish was to do with the size of the gun compared to the size of the ship and its armour; unbalanced or what?

I would be interested to hear about the "amazing performance" though - tell me more

Please do not take this the wrong way - every one is entitled to their own opinion - but that is absolutely ridiculous. That is not a warship - it is a complete and utter mess [:D]

I wonder what was up there ? Did the 'pagodas' have any function that couldn't have been more easily placed closer to deck or did they just decide to put up a skyscraper on a Battleship ?

I think the main rangefinders were up there, which theoretically meant that they would have a longer maximum visible range. Practically the weather was rarely clear enough to let anyone see to the horizon well enough to target, no matter how high up. I suppose it also kept the RFs from being interfered with by things like smoke from both the engines and fires onboard.

They also look intimidating, I guess.

Thanks, as you can maybe tell I don't know much about ships and was interested to see if there was a reason behind this strange design. Thanks for the info.

Since were doing pictures, I suppose I should put a few up too - sadly good photos of Nagato from before the end of the war but post reconstruction are hard to find.

Plenty of good drawings around though...
