As the IJN I am quite happy to commit small TFs with a couple of CLs and DDs into Allied airspace, they are hard to hit from the air or sea........when you think about it in real life it must have been very hard for a BB to get a hit on something moving at 35kts......

When ever I have Cl and DD tf near allied bombers they get creamed, dive or heavy.

I raised this ages ago. Very frustrating. You wait until the allied DDs upgrade to the 5" EPR (EPR?? from memory), then they'll also drill anything but your heaviest CAs and up in surface combat too.

well.. I think the air number are 1-9k 10-15k with 1-9 being dive 11-15 being glide? This is a really strange game..
OK, in all fairness... The two lowly DD's that lead to the great ships demise where preceeded by FIVE surface groups.. FIVWE not three or four, after so many surface tf getting shot to hell and back at least the dutch crews put some fish into soemthing!!! omg I lost well over 100dd, all my pre war cl, most of the pre war ca... most in surface action.. you want to stop the nip, you got to pay the piper.. but seriously.. see these results... I am the allied player here of course, in there context of hundreds and hudreds of night surface actions.. he attacks my klanding zones , I defend, not a real tough one there..
As to why he cannot hit the ships with his air crews.. he ALSO has flown in slow large torp happy planes, unecorted against high exp fighters and ACTUALLY gotten off torpedoes and lived! I mean sure 50 Betties and a cap of tw oor three, but 15 francis agaisnt more fighterws? WTF?
If you want the game to make sence, play checkers.

I don't recall the exact altitudes, but dive bombers can't get into a full dive if their initial altitude is too low. I believe if they are set below 10,000 feet, they will glide bomb. Above, that they will dive bomb. The training of the pilots comes into play too. Poorly trained pilots will be more likely to glide bomb, no matter what the altitude.

this really should be clear to us, does anyone know what teh code is for dive bombing? I have been under the assumption after reading in the forums that dive bombers would only attack via db under 10 k.. its not like I am a stranger here! lol

I agree. I thought in real life the started there dives from pretty high up.

I guess it's when my carriers are around and you are landing but they attack the small DD force that is no danger to them instead of the ships unloading. We have had some confusing things go in this game.

I always set my DB's at 10k and they always dive bomb. I think a higher elevation will cause them to horizontal bomb the target.

What amuses me is when my Avengers carry bombs due to range, they're more accurate than the DB's! I had a 3 CV TF raiding the Marshalls and caught a TF of APD's, DD's and small cargo ships at extended range for the Avengers. The DB's hit the xAKL's and couldn't hit the more nimble APD's and DD's. Then the Avengers showed up, and right away each 4 plane flight got 2-5 hits on every one of the smaller ships. I even had one lone Avenger get two 500 lb bomb hits on an undamaged DD!

I'm basing my comments on what others have said and my observation of the DB's. They are much more accurate at <10000' than if they are set at, say, 15,000, and I can only assume that's because they are dive bombing rather than glide or horizontal bombing. These are CV DB's so they've got good experience and morale, not like some A-24's I've got at Lunga who have to deal with malaria and swamps.

I still do not get why DB's would not always use divebombing. In the game torp bombers do not drop from 5000, so why if I set the DB to 20000 does it not act like the torp bombers do. I think experience should be the factor between dive and gilde bombing.

DB's would perform level/glide bombing during the war if they were attacking ground units or fixed locations, and the AA fire was too heavy. Level bombing tended to be at higher elevations than what dive bombing would start at, so IMO requiring them to be at <=10k to dive bomb and >10k to glide/level bomb makes perfect sense.

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x D4Y1 Judy bombing from 4000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 500 kg GP Bomb

5 x D3A1 Val releasing from 3000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

do you see diferenc

I guess I don't get the point then. So then is it the same for TB bombers. If they fly above a certain height the drop bombs, I guess my point is if say I set my alt. to 20000 for my whole strike on naval attack, what would happen? At this point people say the fighters will escort, the divebombers will level bomb from there, but the TB bombers will will drop from that 20k to drop trops from several hundred feet, or do they level bomb. So why is it if they are on naval attack they don't dive bomb above a certain alt. If the answer is height, then why should a TB bomber coming in at 9000 drop down to drop a torp but a dive bomber can not glide slope to certain height then dive bomb from a certain point like TB do to get to trop dropping depth.

agreed, the game does not make sence..
I think the below 10 is dive is silly..
It makes more sence to allow the groups to set there altitude based on the target and the leader, but then all the micro managers including myself would go apepoop when our favorite leader did something stupid, like bansia attack with a sqd of torpedoes like at midway..
