For Sci-fi i would recommend the lost fleet, by Jack Campbell its a attempt to explore just what space combat would be like when you take into account the rapid advance of computer targeting software and due to the sheer speed of travel, concepts like time-lag.

Very interesting. I'm going through a bunch of other novels and considering some more, but I'll definitely keep that one in mind. And to you I recommend Antares Dawn & sequels Antares Passage and Antares Victory. Those are written by NASA engineer, so you can be sure that space mechanics are spot on.

Lost Fleet?
Is that the one where they find a captain floating in space after a hundred years and decide to appoint him admiral of the fleet?

Pournelle hosted a series called There Will Be War, went to 9 volumes, each with a theme. Nothing better out there.

I agree Pournelle was the best. Look here, not all his work but inspired by him: http://www.warworldcentral.com/index.php

For those who have never encountered his Iron Law of Bureaucracy I share it now as it shows his genius.

...in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: those who work to further the actual goals of the organization, and those who work for the organization itself. Examples in education would be teachers who work and sacrifice to teach children, vs. union representatives who work to protect any teacher including the most incompetent. The Iron law states that in all cases, the second type of person will always gain control of the organization, and will always write the rules under which the organization functions

John Ringo was a member of the 82md Airborne as I recall. David Weber was former Military too I think.
His series are all or mostly about conflict. These are all from Baen Books Series , Paladin of Shadows, Empire of Man, Into the looking Glass, Council Wars, Legacy of Aldenata, Troy Rising, Monster Hunter Memoirs, Black Tide Rising.
David Weber has a few series too his most famous are Honor Harrington and Safehold, He has a web page with all his stuff. They are both currently still writing, David Drake is good too but don't know if he is still around.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

Something to that affect. He had long been a legend before he was found. He was left in charge based on seniority when the senior staff went to parley, and the parley didn't go well.

Of the newer sci-fi writers, Iain M Banks is my favourite. Sadly, he died of cancer a few years ago at a relatively early age. Diagnosis was made too late - though this is not a veiled criticism of anyone because I know nothing of the circumstances.

I have read first few novels of Paladin of Shadows. Be aware that at least first novel is heavy on Republican propaganda. In addition John Ringo himself admits that he has took a number of Artistic Licenses. And he judged the first novel to be so bad that he didn't want to publish it and was surprised about positive feedback for free samples he uploaded to Internet.
David Drake is good too
His novels are more realistic than Ringo's and Hammer's Slammers is based on his personal experiences in Vietnam.
