You would need to uninstall and do a clean re-install from the full master installer.

However, I would recommend first looking in the troubleshooting FAQ and seeing if the new gameoverrides.txt allows you to get things working again, as 1.0.1.8 fixes many other issues.

Please try the new gameoverrides.txt, explained in the new troubleshooting FAQ to see if specifying your resolution and display mode there allows you to get past this.

I'm having the reset issue as well. The one thing I noticed is that if I set the resolution one less than the maximum it works correctly.

So, on my system 2560x1440 is the maximum on the list. If I use the maximum value, DW2 starts in 1920x1200. If I use 2048x1080 it correctly uses that resolution. Is it possible the last selection on the list isn't getting selected?

This did fix the full screen issue for me but I noticed my graphics adapter resets also and is now the basic Microsoft Render adapter and not my Nvidia adapter. Setting to 2 gave me back my Nvidia adapter but I lose the full screen again...The only way I get full screen is with GAI set to 1 which is the basic Microsoft adapter...

Love your work. This patch must have snuck in sometime in the afternoon because I was so confused why the game felt smoother and it was 3am in the morning!! Now for that 60fps cap....

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is now a new startup log in the /data/logs sub-folder of the Distant Worlds 2 installation.

This is also where any crash logs are located. If you are experiencing an issue, please post these logs for us along with the issue report.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a new GameSettingsOverride.txt in the /data sub-folder of the Distant Worlds 2 installation.

The settings here may help some players experiencing a black screen on load issue.
Please move custom files like this out of the data directory.

When you 'verify files' using Steam, the system sees every change made to settings etc. and the verification fails, so they are reacquired and reset to what they were.

I do know if this is the right place for the question, but I am trying anyway.
I just updated from 1.0.1.4 to 1.0.1.6 and got a bad surprise : whilst the 1.4 was running perfectly, the 1.6 is stuck in a black screen. The program is not crashing (around 5% to 10% of CPU usage), you can actually move the cursor over the screen but nothing beyond that.
Is there a way to work this around, or to get back to 1.4 as I did not performed a backup before upgrade

Thanks in advance.

Post by NStriker »

I seems to me the regression in 1.0.1.8 is that is doesn't detect DPI scaling properly again.

I have a 4K screen 3840x2160 with scale set to 150%.
DW2 keeps resetting to 3200 × 1800 (QHD+) on launch (one res down from max).
If I override to 4800x2700 then it correctly sets to 4K, but @24Hz instead of 60Hz.
Maybe the bevvy of refresh rates my display apparently exposes is an issue?

It's a mess all around.

Having had to program around it myself in the past Windows scaling is THE WORST, especially with multiple monitors set to different DPIs, but a necessary evil.

GRAPHIC Card setting recognize card resolution wrong, even when I choose the correct one 1920x1200 , which works ingame, but when I start new it is back to something else

WORKED BEFORE last patch

But the real big disaster in that game are

1.) the resource bug , where you couldn't change settings you want to store as it has everywhere -216352896

2.) SPIES ARE BROKEN af ... stealing tech and blowing things up ... the whole spy system is unbalanced and pure bs !

How could this two things pass any testing, as they make the game unplayable and a joke !
Come on devs, sit down and change that spy system , we already had that in DW 1

We have a new update coming today that should hopefully resolve the resolution issues.

Do you have a save file that shows the resource bug you are describing?

Spies are not always broken, but clearly sometimes they are. That's why this slipped through and we are looking into it now.

No sorry , as I tried to install some mods, special that Mod Framework I had to delete the whole game and install new ...

but both gamebreaking bugs should be easy to replicate ... as IT HAPPENED ALWAYS in any game I started and also some players posting in STEAM about that

1,) That resource bug, always happened when I colonized a new planet , after I have built a starport .. maybe it ahs something to do with my start settings, always using RARE settings, largest galaxy and longest research times ... human race ... I posted a screenshot here in one of the threads

2.) Spies just start a game only with that race, which has large boni at spying, with any evil politic setting and let the game autorun, it will get out of control very soon, I am sure

Both things happened in all 3 games I tried ... but you couldn't defend against that spies, with any tool the game gives you ... only start the editor and delete that race, when you know , who is it and even that happens, very seldom, that your 8 counterspies tell you anything ... even have pulled back all gov , who had counterspy ... lost ever yyear around 5 to 10 buildings ... and seems they steal also like crazy , because even with reduced research , most of that races, had near endless techs, which I could steal myself AND I HAVE DEACTIVATED tech trading ...

Thanks for this information. A lot of players may think that because they see a bug all the time that it's easy to reproduce. This is not the case. I tried reproducing both this morning and could not. Thanks for this additional information, but a save game that reproduces it for you would also be very valuable.

Thanks for that additional information. If you see this again, please also upload a save file for us.

1,) That resource bug, always happened when I colonized a new planet , after I have built a starport .. maybe it ahs something to do with my start settings, always using RARE settings, largest galaxy and longest research times ... human race ... I posted a screenshot here in one of the threads
Thanks for this information. A lot of players may think that because they see a bug all the time that it's easy to reproduce. This is not the case. I tried reproducing both this morning and could not. Thanks for this additional information, but a save game that reproduces it for you would also be very valuable.

Okay will keep in mind, started now my 4th game
BUT changed all races, with a mod, so that they have -2000% at espionage, because that was the worst thing in all my games !
That resource bug, has a workaround, where you delete the planet with the editor and create a new one.
But haven't found anything in the editor to delete only the spies ...
IS there a possibility , if not please include one THANKS

Some force you to download the whole game again. :)
Again...huge thank you
Well, I have the GOG Version and installed 1.0.1.4 and tried to run the patch to 1.0.1.6 but it did not work. It told me I have the wrong version.
Had to download the whole new Version.
I had no problems with the first Version but there were already little fixes that I wanted to patch,

I wrote also in the GOG Forum and told them the problem,
I do not know if they read it because there is not Subforum for DW2 right now.

I have it installed into C:\Program Files\Distant Worlds 2
I tried putting the installer into installation directory and run it there but the result is same.
Original install for me is; C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games
I am, quite, sure all Matrix games get installed to a Matrix folder...not sure how you got it to install where you did.
I also have GOG version and that's why it's installed into C:\Program Files\Distant worlds 2, because that's what I choose during installation.
I tried to install the game into C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games and running the patch installer doesn't work for same reason.
Anyway since DW2 is x64 bit program it should be installed into C:\Program Files, not C:\Program Files (x86)

This patch does not work for GOG users obviously.
It was a flaw with the first update and it was GOG that did it wrong (so my guess).
The new patch from 1.0.1.8 on works flawless.
AND that is why I write here again is, it does not matter where you install it. The patch finds it.
Better you always patch, otherwise you have to re-set your settings.
right now, there is not much to re-set though..

Have fun playing and may the bugs/glitches not affecting you that much
