Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

-Finally the enemy invaded Guadalcanal. IJN ships attempted to engage the enemy fleet in a night battle, but a marginal vitory became a crippling defeat, as the retiring TF´s were heavily hit by enemy Carrier based air units. In the fighter vs fighter front, A6M´s shot down two more Kyttihawks, withouth losses, while the F4F´s shot down a lonely A6M2N attempting to defend the surface fleet. Tomorrow, my fighters will escort Betties in a raid against damaged ships in Lunga. We expect the F4F´s to fight. Let us see what happens....

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: denisonh

There is no doubt that leadership is one of the critical factors impacting combat.

Modern combat is a collective effort, and as such how the UNIT performs is only in part a function of INDIVIDUAL performance.

The application of tactics and doctrine based on the situation confronting a unit is where leadership can make the difference in the outcome.

To fail to include this as a major part of the air combat model would be ludicrous.

I agree 100%.

But how can "desk jockey" commander help air unit in air to air combat hundreads of miles away?

Can we assume that all he does is to prepare his unit in advance for combat (by learning advanced tactics for example)?

Play Lemurs version if you really want to see bloody.

Me and Panzer have turned Rangoon into a meat grinder for fighters. We have both lost around 150 fighters over 3-4 turns. Hurricanes are demon spawns in his versions. And I am throwing multiple Zero units at him, the best I got. He is losing more than me, but he can afford to, I can not.

I am not sure that the "must be present to win" philosophy applies to modeling the effects of leadership on unit performance.

How a unit approaches it's tasks in terms of organization, doctrine, training, management, and inspiriration are in large part a function of the leadership.

How tasks are assigned (who leads and flies what missions), the manner in which they are presented (orders, objectives, and methods to achieve them) and instilling a sense of discipline, confidence, and sense of purpose do not require a physical presence at the time of execution.

It is not coincidence that leadership is one of the 4 principles of combat power. (along with manuever, firepower, and protection)

-More tests:

-Two days withouth major combat. A group of Zeroes flew a sweep mission over Gilli Gilli in 08/10/42. Three P-40 intercepted but there were no losses. In the following day I decided to test the fatigue effect. The same A6M2 squadron was ordered to fly sweep over Port Moresby. Fatigue level (in the turn before the battle) was 18. Attitude 10000ft (to avoid P-39 penalty). Battle was 18 A6M2 vs 19 P-39. Losses were 2 A6M2 and 3 P-39. Up to know, cumulative losses in fighter vs. fighter combat were about 20 Allied fighters (most P-39´s)and 12 Zeroes. In escorting torpedo bomber missions (ETBM) the result is 8 A6M´s lost vs. 5 Allied fighters lost
