The seas don't look that heavy either.

That can't be the whole ship, but that is all I can make out..[&:][&:]ORIGINAL: Terminus
what do ya mean? She's all there, in her short and stubbyness...

Aside from the fact that the front end of the flight deck is nearly SUBMERGED, you mean?

Must be an optical illusion, but the back half of the ship looks missing, the flight deck that I outlined doesn't corrispond to what must be the entire ship, and the 'Island' can't be at the back corner of the flight deck - as it appears to be in the photo!
Wierd!![X(][X(]

Well, the second CVE in the back doesn't help...[;)]

The wierd part is if you look at her flight deck it appears that you could get about 4 or 5 of those planes parked end to end down the length of the flight deck, below is the Lunga Point from the side - and I illustrated that 11 &1/2 aircraft could be parked that way!ORIGINAL: Terminus

It's definitely a wonky picture, which was part of the reason I picked it whilst going through NavSource (OOB-hunting)...

in the pic that Terminus provided - it looks like they are parked sideways on the bow section, so it would make sense. However, it also means that she is about 2/3 submerged!![X(] The waves themselves just don't look that bad (as Drex suggested) - i'd expect 60 to 100 foot monsters to produce this kind of pitching...

It's an illuuuuuusion... OoooohWoooohOoooh...[:D]

I dunno. It looks like there may be a couple of D shaped censor blackouts covering the view of the forward bridge area. You can see her antenna array behind the blacked-out areas. Either that or perhaps there was some sort of canvas screen put up to shield the bridge from waves and of course prevent the helmsman from seeing anything forward.

Show me a fellow who rejects statistical analysis a priori and I'll show you a fellow who has no knowledge of statistics.

Every time i think i have this pic figured out, something else confusing pops up...
at first i thought we were looking at the stern, but after seeing Big B's pic - it looked like the bow, but the superstructure appears strange - like the bridge is on the wrong (port instead of starboard)side... could the photo be reversed??

honestly, the pic might not show it clearly enough but if you take a closer look, those waves are frightening.
been on sailing ships sine I am a little boy and if you take a closer look at the sea alone, those waves are murderous. do you see the error in the picture on the right side ?
the bottom of the wave in front of the ship is on the lower end of the error. the top of the wave is where the water is white. copare the wave to the ship and you get an idea of the height o the wave. since we can see many details of the ship the storm is almost over - the waves are still murderouis but the wind is not so hard anymore. still a very uncomfortable position. but with the wind included it would have benn even worse. just my 0.02 cent being a sailboat guy since 25 years.

I wonder if that skipper had room for any ballast at all?.That ship looks like the proverbial "cork in the water"..[:D]

RE: Hang on to your lunches, boys!
There is just something "screwy" with that picture. The deck is too short for a flight deck, the conning tower (or Island) is in the wrong place - it is also completley at the wrong angle compared to the rest of the ship!
Nothing in the picture looks right - nothing.

RE: Hang on to your lunches, boys!
The only way i can make sense of it is:
1) the pic was accidentally printed backwards (someone reversed the neg)
2) there is some censorship of the island area
3) The Lunga Point is superimposed on the CVE behind her (you can see the antennae of the Lunga Point extending into the sky at an angle to other CVE's antennae).
4) We are seeing the BOW of the ship only - apparently the stern is submerged!

The ship is headed towards the camera. Either that or she is on collision course with the second CVE. You can see the island of the Lunga Sea. It appears as 2 black rectangles superimposed on the front of the second CVE.
Note all the sailors in a line across the flight deck. They are either doing (1) a FOD walkdown or (2) they are forming a human chain to keep the aircraft from rolling off the deck! Crazy squids.

You may be right... looking closer it does look as though the barricade is up in the left part of the picture. However, to the right is a bunch of sailors in a line.

Oh yeah, but across the front of the deck? That definitely looks like the crash net...
