Turn 67 Sep 24, 1942

Post by topeverest »

2 turns till the mud!

Germanys main focus this past turn was to:
1. Grind the Boguchar defenses down - Germany is being particular about pushing all Russian forces on the don to the east side.
2. Effort towards Tula, which the Russians countered in their turn, so no progress
3. partially forces the Kalitva river 11 hexes NE of Rostov
4. Cleared out Russian forces from most of the northern side of the Don at Rostov, but do not take the city
5. Germany has another successful air combat turn. I have to mix up my air doctrine again.

Rostov

Post by topeverest »

Germany falls short of taking city, but I should expect a major battle this turn.

Russian strength in still around the city in the marsh to the west. Both are rail hexes, so I have to try to make him pay.

Russians have been digging in on the east side of the Don at Rostov, so I hope it is strong enough to hold for a turn.

Boguchar

Post by topeverest »

I must say I admire the German persistence to make a hard barrier on the Don around Boguchar. The enemy has been very dogged in pushing Russian forces off that real estate

Tula

Post by topeverest »

Very slow German progress amid Russian counterattacks. Germany probably doesn't get Tula or across the Ula river. Plans to evacuate the salient that would exist should the Germans push past Tula are on hold.

Just the north edge of the campaign area here.

No combat in Crimea or north of Tula

Aircraft Swaps

Post by topeverest »

Last turn I turned on auto upgrades for the remainder of my aircraft now that I have sufficient reserves.

Lots of switching this turn out of Migs and such.

This continues to be an AAR of outstanding quality, with a lot of effort put into getting all details presented to the reader.

I appreciate the kind words -

If my play could elevate, well that's the first goal of this AAR, to critically review the decisions I make during the game.

Turn 68 Oct 1, 1942

Post by topeverest »

1 Turn to the mud season.

Germany continued along its major themes.
a. Germany clears about 6 hexes in the vicinity of Tula. She will remain in Russian hands through the mud season
b. Germany takes Boguchar in one attack - what! Damn!
c. Axis shifts most of his strength around Bogchar about 5 hexes south and is attacking east on an axis where the Tyr and Tysmla rivers meet
d. Axis chose to try to breach the Don 4 hexes east of the city. One hex was taken, and I failed to take it back
e. Russian air doctrine changes failed to reverse the heavy losses. Germany has moved her fighter bases in bundles within abou7 hexes of he front, and I am having the devil of a time countering it

RE: Turn 68 Boguchar

This battle perplexes me.

1 attack, 3 panzer divisions unsupported by infantry, level 2.84 fort, infantry and armor in city, supplied.

what am I missing here - just lucky as heck?

The bottom half of the screen shows 6 on map units attacking and 15 support, in must be a quirk of the display that it is showing support units ahead of on map units. If you click the little '[v]' next to the unit list it will scroll down a and show you the rest.

Here is a picture of the German toehold east of the Don.

I made a concerted counterattack effort and failed

Mud season arrives - Summer campaign season ends with current turn. 5 turns of mud upcoming.

a. Germany forces another two hexes across the Don 40 and 50 miles east of Rostov.
b. Germany pushes 10-20 miles east from Boguchar area and now is 4 hexes past the city

Here is that view. Surprisingly little combat in the sector. Only 4 combats!

Rostov will remain Russian until the winter

RE: Turn 69 Summer Campaign Summary

Post by topeverest »

By any measure, Germany had a strong and successful campaign season. Russia was unable to prevent any action taken - only slow them down. Germany maintained the initiative the entire season, and is poised to launch the Caucuses campaign.

Russia succeeded in that no major bundles of units were captured, and a major breakout was prevented. The defense along to Don south of Voronezh succeeded, and Rostov technically is in Russian hands.

RE: Turn 69 Support Units

Post by topeverest »

Here is a view of the AP spend to increase support units.

My priority continues to finish the following sequence per army / front in the combat zone
3 sapper regiments (90% complete)
1 heavy AT regiment (80% complete)
3 artillery regiments (70% complete)
3 AA regiments (15% complete)

In 43 I plan to:
a. put heavy armor support units in, once trucks no longer have to be specifically managed
b. put support units in all my corps level ground units
