A Train for Arnhem
Two days after the launch of Operation Market-Garden, the 82nd Airborne Division was still trying to gain its objective
- the bridges which spanned the River Waal in Nijmegen. While a strong force attempted to take the main road bridge, a
more modest force consisting of a U.S. paratroop company, a platoon of British infantry and a troop of tanks were to take
the railroad bridge.
82nd "All American" Airborne Division(2/4): --> [- : German
Scenario Length: 5 Game Turns - LOS (12 hexes)
Victory objective: The side with the required Victory Points is the winner. Both sides gets VPs for owning VP Objectives.

Die Roten Teufel
Early in the day the 9th SS Reconnaissance Battalion (sent south the day before) concluded it was not needed in Nijmegen
and returned to Arnhem. Though aware of the British troops at the bridge, it attempted to cross by force and was beaten
back with heavy losses, including its commanding officer, SS-Hauptsturmführer Viktor Gräbner.
The Germans underestimate their opponents and are unaware that in 1943, the brigade deployed as normal infantry fought
against their German counterparts, the Fallschirmjäger, where they earned the nickname "Die Roten Teufel"(the Red Devils).
German attacks come from over the bridge and also from within the Town. Push back them!

ASL The General Scenario G2 - Last Act in Lorraine
Published in The General #23.6
SINGLING, FRANCE, 6 December 1944: For nearly a month the US 4th
Armored Division have been fighting in difficult terrain to clear Lorraine. On 6
December, in an attempt to take Bining and Rohrbach and reach the River Sarre
and the German border, Lt. Col. Creighton Abrams' tank batallion was broken
into two combat teams to facilitate its advance. Sweeping north, the leading task
force came under heavy direct and indirect fire from the direction of Singling,
a village occupied by elements of the 111th Panzergrenadier Regiment. Abrams
decided on his own initiative to attack the town and attempt to hold it while the
remainder of his force turned towards Bining. Cpt. Leach, in command of Com-
pany B with armored infantry aboard, was given no time to scout enemy posi-
tions or make plans. Spreading his command into a line abreast formation, Leach
led them in a grand charge over the crest to the south in finest cavalry tradition,
while supporting artillery poured smoke and HE into town to mask his approach.
Best played as US vs. German when playing against the AI.
Units
German: Squads, Mortars, Leaders, LMG, MMG, HMG, OBA, Radio, Tanks, Tank Destroyers, Anti-Tank and AA Guns
Allies: Squads, Leaders, MMG, Bazooka, Tanks
Maps: ASL Maps 12, 17
Setup
Americans set up anywhere in US Zone 1
Germans have been pre-placed in this scenario
Terrain: Orchards (scenario rules call for all woods/brush hexes to be orchard,
so you will see LOTS of orchard hexes), Grain (out of season)
Visibility: 8 hexes
Scenario Length: 10 Game Turns
Victory Objective: The US player wins by controlling all four multi-hex buildings.
Level of victory is determined by victory point level at the end of the game.
Original scenario design by: ASL Men
NOTE: I also included a scenario with a GE prefix that allows for German set-up when playing against
a human or the Allied AI. The other scenario has pre-placed German units.

Once the 101st Airborne Division parachuted into Holland on 17 September 1944, they began the task of capturing the
bridges assigned to them. One of the bridges assigned to the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment was the bridge over the
Dommel River at St. Oedenrode. Seized initially on the evening of the 17 September, St. Oedenrode became one of the
points of counterattack by German forces arriving from the west in their efforts to cut Hell’s Highway. Two German
regiments of Fallschrimjäger (paratrooper) from the 1. Fallschirmarmee (1st Parachute Army) were initially assigned to

Climax At Nijmegen Bridge
Nijmegen, Holland, 20 September 1944: Operation Market Garden was to be characterized by intense fighting for the control
of a number of vital bridges. Each was a vital link in the chain leading to Arnhem. The road bridge across the Waal River in Nijmegen was the second of three
bridges which had to be secured in order to relieve the British 1st Airborne and throw a force across the Rhine. A task
force composed of a mixture of U.S. paratroopers and the British armored relief column was assigned to take it. The
paratroopers had successfully crossed the Waal in company strength one mile west in a daring daylight river assault. The
orders for the task force in Nijmegen were to cross the road bridge at any cost and link up with the paratroopers who
were fighting their way toward the north end of the bridge.

Veghel, Holland, 22nd September 1944. The 101st Airborne Division had managed to capture all the canal bridges between
Grave and Eindhoven. This opened the path for the XXX Corps to reach Arnhem. Model prepared to retake the territory held
by the Paratroopers. The small town of Veghel was the focal point of the only significant German effort to sever Hell’s
Highway. On the morning of the 22nd September, a reinforced Kampfgruppe attacks Veghel from the east. The only unit in
Veghel was the 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Regiment reinforced by a number of stranded British units. Using Dutch

Medal Of Honor
John Roderick Towle (October 19, 1924 - September 21, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the
United States military's highest decoration-the Medal of Honor-for his actions in World War II.
Towle joined the Army from his birth city of Cleveland, Ohio in March 1943, and by September 21, 1944 was serving as
a private in Company C, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. On that day, near Oosterhout in the
Netherlands during Operation Market Garden, Towle engaged a German force with his rocket launcher in an attempt to
disable two enemy tanks and a half-track. He was killed during the battle and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor
six months later, on March 15, 1945. Towle, aged 19 at his death, was buried at Calvary Cemetery in his hometown of
Cleveland.
Private Towle's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 21 September 1944,
near Oosterhout, Holland. The rifle company in which Pvt. Towle served as rocket launcher gunner was occupying a
defensive position in the west sector of the recently established Nijmegen bridgehead when a strong enemy force of
approximately 100 infantry supported by 2 tanks and a half-track formed for a counterattack. With full knowledge of the
disastrous consequences resulting not only to his company but to the entire bridgehead by an enemy breakthrough, Pvt.
Towle immediately and without orders left his foxhole and moved 200 yards in the face of intense small-arms fire to a
position on an exposed dike roadbed. From this precarious position Pvt. Towle fired his rocket launcher at and hit both
tanks to his immediate front. Armored skirting on both tanks prevented penetration by the projectiles, but both vehicles
withdrew slightly damaged. Still under intense fire and fully exposed to the enemy, Pvt. Towle then engaged a nearby
house which 9 Germans had entered and were using as a strongpoint and with 1 round killed all 9. Hurriedly replenishing
his supply of ammunition, Pvt. Towle, motivated only by his high conception of duty which called for the destruction of
the enemy at any cost, then rushed approximately 125 yards through grazing enemy fire to an exposed position from which
he could engage the enemy half-track with his rocket launcher. While in a kneeling position preparatory to firing on the
enemy vehicle, Pvt. Towle was mortally wounded by a mortar shell. By his heroic tenacity, at the price of his life, Pvt.
Towle saved the lives of many of his comrades and was directly instrumental in breaking up the enemy counterattack.

During Operation "Market Garden" 34 876 airborne soldiers were committed: 20 190 jumped in parachute, 13 871 landed in
gliders and 905 from planes. 1 927vehicles, 568 guns and 5 230 tons of equipment and supplies were also brought by
airlift. The airborne units fought with an utmost bravery against an enemy much stronger both in strength and assets. The
paratroopers lost 13 000 KIA, wounded and MIA. But this sacrifice was not useless because it permitted to immobilize the
Germans into Arnhem and to inflict them heavy losses which therefore facilitated the task of the 82nd and 101st divisions.
Like so many examples in History, "Market Garden" failure is more the result of a set of convergent causes than one
single error. According to the British historian Martin Middlebrook (Arnhem 1944 book) these causes are as follows:
- The under-assessment about the German capability to recover and to resist after the Normandy landing, which only
Generals Urquhart and Sosabowski disapproved; - The fact that the 1st airborne division was not informed about the
presence, though well known, of two armoured divisions around Arnhem; - General Browning’s decision to set up his CP in
Holland, which did not brought anything to the conduct of the battle, but reduced the first wave by 36 gliders; - The
deficiencies of the air transport planning, particularly the refusal to drop by night, the refusal to drop at least one
element close to the two ends of the bridge, the refusal to operate two turn-rounds on the first day and the selection of
DZs far away from the targets. All these factors deprived the paratroopers of their best advantage, the tactical
surprise; - The incapability of the 1st division Commander to make the battalion COs understand the vital importance
speedy execution in the objective seizure; - The insufficient use of the possibilities offered by the Dutch Resistance
and population; - The insufficient use of close air support; - General Browning’s wrong assessment about the importance
of seizing the Nimegue bridge and the priority to put on it; - The slowness of the IInd Army and the XXXth Corps' thrust;
- The wrong estimate by General Urquhart and his staff of the importance of the Driel ferry and of the heights
controlling the position.

RE: XXX*ARNHEM(11/11)*
Rico, I applaud your ability to make good, challenging scenarios. Unlike official ASL scenarios that rely on a players ability to know the book to take advantage of little known rules for play balance that cannot translate well into TotH, your games are based totally on TotH. Your scenarios are tough but not ridiculously so. I play at the NORMAL setting so maybe my experience is different compared to the HARD setting players but I find them just right. Thank you.

ASL The Last Hurrah Scenario 45 - Revenge at Kastelli
Published in ASL Module 6 - The Last Hurrah
KASTELLI, CRETE, 20 May, 1941: A number of Greek regiments, under-
strength and poorly armed but with grim determination after the defeats of the
past month, were on Crete. On the day of the German paratroop assault, one
such - the 1st, numbering a bit over 1,000 men - was stationed at Kastelli near
the western end of the island to protect its small harbor. German troops landed
east of the village, and north and south of the main road nearby. Needing no urg-
ing from the New Zealand officers attached, the Greeks - though poorly-armed -
sallied out to meet the enemy.
Best played as Greek vs. German when playing against the AI.
Units:
German: Squads, Leaders, LMG
Greeks: Squads, Leaders, LMG
Maps: ASL Maps 2, 3 and 11
Setup:
Greeks set up anywhere in BR Zone 1
Germans have been pre-placed in this scenario
Terrain: Village, grain, brush (all woods hexes made brush by scenario rules), orchards
Visibility: 7 hexes
Scenario Length: 11 turns (the last turn being Greek only)
Victory Objective: The Greek player wins a major victory by amassing 20 or more victory points.
The German player wins by preventing this and/or by achieving the VP amounts set in the scenario.
NOTE: I also included a scenario with a GE prefix that allows for German set-up when playing against

ing from the New Zealand officers attached, the Greeks - though poorly-armed -
sallied out to meet the enemy.

RE: Submitted Scenarios
3 Custom Scenarios that are linked together for the Battle of Fontenay-Le-Pesnel. These scenarios take units from one scenario to the next.
Name: Operation Martlet: Fontenay-le-Pesnel Village Part1
Date: 25th June 1944
Location: In the rural lowlands West of Caen, France
History: Operation Martlet (also known as Operation Dauntless) was part of a series of British attacks
to capture the town of Caen and its environs from German forces during the Battle of Normandy of World
War II begun by the Allies. It was a preliminary operation undertaken on 25 June 1944 by XXX Corps of
the British Second Army, to capture Rauray and the area around Noyers.
At noon on the 25th, the Tyneside Scottish moved up to le Haut d'Audreu to secure the area and the 1/4th
King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry advanced with the 24th Lancers through the 4th Lincolns, from the
hamlet of Bas de Fontenay (Lower Fontenay), west of Fontenay village along the Juvigny road, to objective
"Walrus" at Tessel Wood on the spur north of Vendes. The infantry advanced uphill and had made 100 yards
(91 m) in four minutes behind a dense creeping bombardment, when a German Nebelwerfer bombardment began,
slowing the advance and causing many casualties. The battalion eventually advanced 1-mile (1.6 km) to the
edge of the wood. A counter-attack was repulsed and the 24th Lancers knocked out two German tanks.
On the left flank, in the 147th Infantry Brigade area, the 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers advancing towards
"Barracuda" on the northern fringe of Fontenay, disappeared into the mist and immediately had many
casualties. Soldiers held on to each other to maintain direction and when the sun rose, snipers and
machine-gunners in their path began to inflict more losses.
Scenario Tactical Overview
German: Squads, LMG, MMG, HMG, Ordnance, AFV, OBA
British: Squads, LMG, MMG, Flamethrower, Mortar, Piat, Ordnance, AFV
Special Scenario Rules:
1) You should only play as the British side during these linked scenarios.
2) This is the first of three scenarios for the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel. See below for special
instuctions for further scenarios. For this scenario place all of your units as you would normally do.
Linked Scenario Special Rules:
Each scenario will increase the playable area of the map and give the player reinforcements. When you
finish a scenario you should record the final location of all British units that are unbroken. You will
position replacement units in the same hexes at the start of the next scenario. Reinforcements will arrive
at the start of each new scenario and come in from the north. It will be assumed that between scenarios
broken units will be taken off the frontlines and replaced by fresh units, and some units will gain or
lose equipment.
While playing through these scenarios keep in mind the goals that you must achieve. If you miss out on
just one point during a playthrough that could make a big difference between a victory and a defeat. Also
keep in mind units final location at the end of a scenario. These locations will be used for the following
scenario, but more importantly if you don't have any units on the frontlines that could be extra time wasted
trying to move units up which inturn could make each additional scenario even more difficult. Try and find
a good balance between getting your units moved up into good positions for the next scenario and pushing
too hard and getting your units broken. Remember only units that are unbroken and not destroyed will be
deployed on the frontlines, you should take extra care to make sure these units survive intact.
The Linked Scenario Outline:
Part 1- British player must secure 2 reinforced buildings that are the German advanced guard to the Village.
Each of these Buildings are worth 1 victory point towards the final total. (this area is north of the main
village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel.)
Part 2- The British player must now rush into the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel and get to key locations.
This will be a building by building, street by street, fight on the main part of the village. There are 3
key locations in the town which the British player must secure for victory points to add to his total.
(This will be the main part of the Fontenay-le-Pesnel village.)
Part 3- The British player must now hold everything they have sacrificed so much for. Beware, the sounds
of German tanks can be heard off in the distance as a massive counter-attack is crossing the river Le
Bordel and headed to retake Fontenay-le-Pesnel. The British player is now the defender of the village
and will setup first using the rules from above. Once again this small village will see bloodshed for
the third time in just one day. Keep hold of the 3 key locations, for each held at the end of this
scenario 1 victory point will be awarded.
At the end of the third scenario the British player will have a total score from all 3 scenarios. His
total number of victory points will determine his final vitory.
British Major Loss 0-1
British Minor Loss 2-3
Tie 4
British Minor Victory 5-6
British Major Victory 7-8
Maps: Two maps
Terrain: Wooded Terrain with some brush and orchards, roads and buildings which are part of a village.
Scenario Length: 8 Full Game Turns
Victory Objective: Hold the three Victory Point locations to earn points towards linked scenario goal.
