hey, nice AAR

I'm starting out a(n axis) PBEM soon so this might come in handy soon

for the hyuga, bad luck for that one [X(] forming a taskforce with 4 BB's i assumed it would be doing well
vs force Z (at least thats what i was planning initially to do as well).
i recall reading somewhere that after docking & being in port fires are first switched to FLT
and after that the flt start going down (except that you had 4 fires instead of 8 [&:])

I'm planning for a LVL 4 AF on 1st turn, but didn't expect the situation to be so much troublesome without one

how are the plans for the later burma / india theatre?

Yes, the Hyuga was painful, but in reality the repair time would have been immense. The tough part was that the floatation was much more stable while it was still at sea, it stayed right at about 86-88 Flt at sea, and once in port it rose, dropped, rose again then sank. It makes me feel like I should have kept it at sea and sent it all the way back to Japan before docking it. By the time it was in port it had no fire damage so I don't know whats going on there.

My opponent has moved all forces in Burma to Rangoon, which looks something like a fortress now, and I haven't deployed all that much there, but maybe I can at least cut it off. I have studied some other games, and I think launching a large attack on India is possible, but the end results are not terribly helpful for the amount of troops needed. Therefore I will just try and take a few bases in Burma to push the Brits back a little farther, out of 4e bomber range for 1942-on, although they will eventually counterattack I'm sure.

Two turns today, up to January 14th now.

Things are still in preparation for the next invasions, but I expect to launch at least one very soon. [:)]

I've confirmed the assesment of some other players that fighter sweep results are way better than escorts. In the course of combat missions over Manila, I lost 2 oscars against p-40's when they were on escort, versus none on a sweep, plus one kill. Since the strike still arrives at the same time, the effect of the sweep is the same as an escort mission.

So from now on, sweeps will represent most of any given "escort" (if possible ofc). Its the same fighters either way so I don't think its a very big deal. Also on the air combat model, flak losses over virtually any given base are just atrocious,[:(] so I have to cut down on large airstrikes a bit, and maybe just focus on taking the base the hard way.

The offensive in China has begun in full, although plenty of units are taking their sweet time advancing. Units move much faster over open, agricultural terrain than I would have thought they would, and most Chinese units are out of the rear areas.

Troops finally moved into Singapore, with massive losses as expected, about 5000 casualties on my side for 1500 on his[:(], but somehow my troops destroyed more guns than they lost.[&:]

On the plus side, I have moved all arty units+one brigade waiting to hit Manila into Bataan, to finish off that garrison, and they have beem inflicting massive casualties for bombardment attacks. Manila has too many troops to take readily with two divisions, but suffice to say there is little chance of a breakout.

Operation "Win" is launching today!

It is a massive force. [8D]

2 British Cl and a DD are sunk near Singapore today, as bombers from Kota Bharu take a day to hit the ships that launched small bombardment attacks on the Singapore force.

Troops in China achieved a two to one ratio against the defenders in an open hex, but they did not retreat! Many areas have at least 1:1 odds but have not been able to push through.

Also in China my opponent brought in some elements of the Chinese airforce to Hengchow, so I launched almost all of my China expeditionary bombers, and significantly damaged the base. Some obsolete fighters and bombers are destroyed on the ground.

Update to Jan 17th

The Kuching landings took place on the 16th, but things did not go perfectly.

There was an unexpected minefield, and disaster was only narrowly avoided with the few minesweepers valientlymanaging to protect the whole invasion fleet. Then the coastal batteries opened up and damaged one of the main transports, and then on top of that there were at least two subs in the hex, with one probably sinking a medium transport.

At the end of the day the transports and cruiser escorts have to pull out because of the threat of Dutch and British air attacks that luckily missed them the day before. This leaves the troops short of supply, and the deliberate attack fails.

I have ordered a shock attack because I believe they really have very few combat troops but I feel it is a risk nonetheless.
------------------
In other news, Bataan fell today, resulting in about 6000 casualties.

He has sent some b-17's in to Cagayan, and they only sunk a minor patrol craft, but I need to make my point so airfield attacks are forthcoming.
-----------------
The invasion is approaching, it won't be more than four or five days out now.

Well, he finally spotted the Darwin invasion force, only about 3 days out now. [:D]

Unfortunatly I got to experience the terrible performance of any fighter vs bomber some more, as 25 navy zeroes were unable to prevent over 90 % of terrible Aussie Hudsons from bombing the force. Why do I even try with this mod? Luckily there were no hits, and the BB's drew most of the bombs from more vulnerable targets. Still you would think zeros at a higher altitude than the hudsons are, and outnumbering them would be an absolute turkey shoot, but no. I'm getting tired of these adjustments, I think I may have been better off with the stock air model, if only it wasn't for the super-cap.

This force has been building at Manado for some time, it includes 2 divisions, a full tank regiment, large base force, and many engineers, totalling about 55000 men. I do not imagine the invasion of Darwin will be easy, but I realize this is a crucial base to take if I want to stave off Allied attacks in the SRA for some time. I mean, if it gets to the point where air and sea forces become totally useless against him, I at least want to have ground forces that he cannot easily push aside to slow his advance.

The shock attack at Kuching was disastrous, and there will be no more of those forthcoming soon. They will just have to hold on until I can resupply and reinforce them, possibly with paratroopers.

Well we hit our first annoying game-engine snag. Half the Darwin invasion force decided to unload over an empty hex north of Darwin instead of Darwin itself. Literally half!!

So thats a redo.

On the plus side, the half force that did land suggests that coastal fire is quite light, no minefields, surface ships or anything like that[:D][:D]

Right, after the redo of the previous turn, the invasion of Darwin goes great and without a hitch! [:)]

The bombardment force did very heavy damage to the airfield and enemy ground troops, quite a number of aircraft were destroyed on the ground. The landing stage then progressed, with predictably high casualties but minimal coastal return fire. The only ship hit is CL Kashii, that ends up with no damage anyway.

More than 3/4ths of the troops are already ashore and getting some rest before the eventual assault.

The air cover from the CVL's has continued to be totally inadequate, and the only real use for it's aircraft seems to be to attack the airfield and naval forces, which works well enough, but one would think the zero's would do a little better against bloody Hudsons.

Anyway, the Aussies are in trouble now. [:)]

Update to January 25th

Darwin force is fully landed, all transports withdrawing. I'll give them a few days to reorganize and then will bring back at least on of the bombardment groups to disrupt the enemy before the first attack. My luck with land combat has seemed to be worse than usual in this game, so I don't want to take big risks in this very important battle.

In China, a massive force is moving in on Changsha, and another pincer will try to infiltrate behind to give the opponent something else to worry about. The Chinese troops have been very lucky though, as it seems massive fatigue is accumulated for even the smallest of movements. That kills the adjusted AV, even against the Chinese.

I will send reinforcements to Kuching soon, by sea and air. The problem is supplies. 2/3 barges made it through to drop some much needed supplies for the units that are already there, but this operation needs to be cleaned up and concluded!

As for Singapore itself, no movement on the ground front yet, but my army and navy bombers are having a field day with a very large group of transports he sent in directly to Singapore. Why I do not exactly know, perhaps to drop supplies, but the price they will pay in valuable shipping is, I have to imagine worse than the potential gain. The only downside is that several very large AP's have been spotted, and I would love to see those destroyed, but instead the torp bombers are only going after medium sized AK's and APs, even though the liner-size APs are right there. [:(]

For the next operation, forces are already on the way, with the first landings in perhaps 3-4 days, and the main landing within a week or two I should think.

January 27th 1942

Hurrah! Initial attack on Darwin reduces fortification level and causes proportionally higher casualties on his side. The next assault will wait until I can get a bombardment force into position to support the attack.

Also, a rather ill advised naval move found the BB Revenge and several cruisers within easy range of the considerable naval air force at Kendari. The BB Revenge takes 10!!! Torpedoes, and sinks immediately, CA Exeter hit also. Moreover, the base I presume they were trying to defend, Koepang, fell on the same day, so there is no point for the attack. I have BB's in the area, and the air groups will continue to pound the remains of the force.

Dutch Martins are being slaughtered daily over balikpapan, but I admire him for the effort of trying to keep my base on its toes.

On the other hand the transports in Singapore docked, and the port attack caused terrible losses on my side. I'll just have to wait for them to leave the port again before I attack. I'm guessing they are dropping off supplies, and it looks like it may be helpful because the AV value for the enemy is going up[:(] but they will be destroyed eventually, Singapore will fall, sooner or later.

The rest of the BB Revenge force is annihalated in its entirely as it tries to attack an empty Kendari port. All that is left is the CL Glasgow which took two torps, and a few DD's. Major losses on the day, 2 CA's sunk, 3 or so Cl's sunk. Combined air attacks from Kendari, Balikpapan, Amboina, and the Mini KB. [:D]

The presence of the BB force detected and attacked yesterday, and a report of a swordfish sighting indicated he was trying to set a trap for shipping at Kendari, but I moved those out as soon as the SCTF was sighted, so the "attack" was inneffectual. The next CL ought to be finished off soon.

I'd like to get things speeded up a little, but I have my goals clearly in mind, its just a matter of executing them.

January 2nd
I've learned by this point that when a walrus sights my ships in an unusual lovation, get out of there. The Repulse and Prince of Wales are still out there, though I would be surprised if they made it through undetected. At risk are a force I want to use to mop up smaller ports in northern Oz, and a damaged CL and escorts. Thats relatively minor, but I don't want to risk it, so they are moving out and the light CV force is moving in. His moves have taught me to be weary of any remaining surface forces in the area because he is willing to throw these ships around whenever he thinks there is the slightest chance of causing damage. If he does attack though, we'll have a replay of the sinking of force Z some 3 months delayed.

Luganville has fallen, and very shortly the New Caledonia force will go in.

Meanwhile some army base forces and aircraft are being moved towards Darwin.

No attack today, I don't know where the walrus came from though.

Airfield attack on palembang destroys 9 aircraft on the ground, mostly blenheims that must have retreated from singapore. The best thing of all- very little flak fire, with no losses on my side because of it--- thats rare with flak bonus!

Army guys already caught up with fleeing aussies, will attack again, but it will just be a deliberate attack, no shock attack with pursuit yet.

Next invasion goes in tomorrow!

Update to February 4th
No surprises in the west, but definately one back east.

The Noumea invasion went in two days before, there were some problems but it hopefully went well enough. Anyway, my opponent must have thought the invasion was not well protected as multiple waves of my carrier based planes decimated the surface combat force he sent to disrupt the invasion. The BB Tennesse is confirmed sunk, 2 CLs badly damaged.

He knows there are CV's there now, so we will see what his next move is. I have not seen his CVs since December.

My opponent and I got hit with the sync bug along with some RL things to take care of on both sides. Anyway, it looks like the bug only affected the very last turn so I'll just pray to the witp gods everything keeps working as it did before the whole problem.

Update to February 6th
Noumea has fallen, even with half the assault force stranded on some godforsaken island that doesn't even get a dot to the south of Nomea. Some A/C will soon be brought in to harass shipping lines and protect the base. Other than the attempted BB attack little has happened, though I am still concerned with the abscence of his CV's from --- anywhere--- as I haven't seen them for months. It makes me keep having to escort every landing force with the KB just in case the enemy CVs show up.

I have another significant invasion in the plan for the south pacific, but beyond that I will have to wait for forces to become available. To some degree the plan is to cut the US off from Australia as much as possible, though I am aware this is not a war winning strategy, just something of a delay, unless of course I throw massive forces into capturing the whole of australia, but that isn't exactly easy by any means.

Singapore is still holding on, but I've decided we ought to capture the place sooner rather than later.

Things are going fairly to plan, I wanted to be a little further along in capturing Java by now, but that plan was set back by the force Z surprise, and I am just now invading Makassar, but surely against the dutch we haven't too much to fear.

Airfield attack on Palembang destroys quite a number of aircraft again, but the real problem is still Soerabaia. I will have enough forces to go for a full invasion of Java within two weeks, but my opponent has concentrated what seems like all available forces in Soerabaia. There are 70 ships there, but flak is killer, and for some reason the bombers tend to go for some meaningless transports instead of the warships that still seem to be there. Flak regardless, all dutch and some brit fighters are massed there, so I'm occupied right now doing zero sweeps to try and clear them out to a managable level.

Then comes the question of where to land. Kragen is from what I have seen and heard the typical landing choice, but I am wondering about some alternatives. Malang, (in CHS) for example, is a lvl 4 airfield, and would be great to capture quickly. However the terrain is not so condusive, there may be a significant garrison, and the port is an abysmal level 0. Anyone have some suggestions here?
