RE: hoi2 ?
I keep the speed setting at a slower rate because I find it more managable that way and it has a "turn based" feel to it.....I know my brains would start leaking out of my nose if I set it any higher.......
It is actual a step game.. each "turn" is a one hour step.. makes more sence that way to my old turn based brain.. and boy is this a greatly fun game, involving on so many levels...
It keeps surprising, or maybe astounding me at how good the "flow" is.. and the IA really does a good job, best I have ever seen by far !
I am not surprised at poeple claiming this is the best game they have ever played.. I cannot imaging the time involved in head to head... but as a solo game it is great, some thing witp is unfortunately not.... witp is good, and a very different take on the management of your troops.....
of course with huge abstraction in HOI@ and a huge micromanager ability in witp.. lets see that sqaudren of p38's in Port Morsby.. what say we etc etc.. and I love witp....
The major flaws are.. none.. not a single MAJOR flaw, several minor tweeks regarding ease of use of the interface, simply because of the multitude of tasks at hand managing a war, building your economy, firing ministers etc but the interface is FANTASTIC compared to witp and others.....
This game has redeamed PARADOX from HOI/hell in my eyes.....

Beg to differ, but it has a very real very large flaw.
No Windowed mode. No resolution settings. Waste of money.
One day developers are going to understand that forcing a fixed resolution without the option of running in a window should that resolution not be acceptable on your hardware is a MUST HAVE FEATURE.
LCD panels are becoming the norm with anyone buying a new system. If you can't run at the fixed resolution of the panel, image quality takes a huge hit. Sad, but from the looks of threads there, they have no plans to address this. You know, this *is* 2005, it would be nice if we stopped assuming everyone on the planet has 5+ year old monitors.
Before you go down the path of saying the interface is fantastic compared to xyz ... you better spell out the facts correctly as people generally trust fellow wargamers. Windowed, it would be great, without it, it's just more wasted hard drive space with very tough to read fonts. Buyer BEWARE!

But Mr. Frag, War in the Pacific has no supported Windowed mode, and no resolution settings. Would you call that also a waste of money? Sorry, it just seems funny that one game like that is ok, but another one becomes a waste of money.

You must know that for the hardcore Matrix-fanatics (like Mr. Frag), everything is a waste of money which isnt made with hexes and published by Matrixgames.
In fact, every counter "argument" so far brought up so far by the "haters" could be applied 1:1 to WITP. In fact, WITP is an even worse program, it is still unstable and its AI and gameplay sucks big time.
Dont get me wrong, I am a big fan of GG, mostly because of his old titles, but your constant bashing of HOI2 makes you look like a fool.
So I wish you all a nice time with your "supergame" and conquering USSR as Japan, laughable land combat routines, crashing sound and the 1000 other issues which will never be fixed.
And now excuse me, I have to play War in Russia.

a) WitP *does* have a windowed mode.
b) WitP has a different font selection shortly. (as the users have requested it)
c) WitP has a colourblind setting shortly. (as the users have requested it)
Lets stick to the FACTS. I'd be playing HOI2 if it didn't give me instant headaches looking it it on my monitor.
Funny how people get so emotional about stating FACTS. I'm not saying HOI2 isn't the best thing since sliced bread, I am saying that the developers choice to hardcode a resolution such as they did is stupid and results in closing off a large portion of the market. People who have LCD monitors need to be made aware of this as generally there is no ability to return software once opened.
RE: hoi2 ?
HOI2 looks really great, everything was improved : the interface, the research model, diplomacy, the combat model, you name it.
But they forgot one thing!
There still doesn't appear to be an Allied Invasion AI. [:(]
I had very high hopes for this one looks like "THE greatest grand strategy game dealing with WWII ever made, but don't expect the Allies to ever liberate Europe!"
Bummer [:(]

Wrong.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

Just for the record, I am not saying WiTP is bad. I am just saying it does not have a "supported" windowed mode (It has one, but I've heard its not supported) and it, on shipping, has no font select, no resolution settings, etc etc. Personally, I love WiTP and Hoi (don't have 2 yet, Im saving up for SCS-Dangerous Waters and SH3 myself).

RE: hoi2 ?
Wrong.
Well I sure hope so.
It's just that in the three games I played so far I never saw one. Neither was there any report of one by a player on the Paradox board that I can remember which is strange cos this was a real problem in the original HOI.
But if you had a major Allied invasion happen in one of your games please tell me about it. Does it happen in all your games or just in a few?
This and the failing Jap AI are really gamebreakers for me...

RE: hoi2 ?
Just for the record, I am not saying WiTP is bad.
As I am not saying that HOI2 is bad if you slow down and read my post. The lack of video support simply makes what might have been a nice game useless for us folks that have real monitors. The game itself could be fantastic for all I know, but without video support, I'll never know.
Here's my desktop ... I have scaled it down to fit here, notice the 4 windowed WITP's running on the right.

If there was a -windowed switch, I'd be running it now.

RE: hoi2 ?
Well, you can look for yourself
Go into your HoI2 folder.
find the /ai/switch/ folder
find the file named USA_Dday.ai
This is an ai file for the US that will be activated when certain conditions are met.
In it you will find, among other things, this part:
Basically this shows that this ai has one focus. To mass troops in southern England, and then invade one of the beaches in the atlantic wall.
There is a known issue with the D-Day AI not being executed because it did not have enough transports. It should be taken care of with 1.2 though. Basically the D-Day ai gets loaded, but then it realizes it doesnt have enough transports to do it, so it reverts back to US gearing up 4 ai...and that one might need to prioritize its transports a tad more. Basically the ai needs 3x as many transports as a human player to launch an invasion.

I see. Thanks for telling me. [:)]
Let's hope it does get fixed in 1.2 then, together with the Jap AI!

RE: hoi2 ?
Actually I did critizise the single screen resolution thing in HOI2 too (not on this board though). In fact there are quite some things I dont like too much in this game. And I am using a 21" CRT and some of the Chinese provinces are as large as my monitor. But neither does this game "stink", nor is it worthless- so please explain me why you join the threat, making silly comments like 4 year olds only to downgrade a pretty good game. I dont like the SSG games at all, but I would never say they "suck" or that they are bad, only because I wont play them. I am happy that Paradox does this kind of games, since there is nearly no market for them and I hope that they are very successful with HOI2. And I think they will.
@Salient:
The game is pretty complex, so writing an AI for it is a pretty hard thing. You should wait for CORE HOI2 or other AI updates, I will sure do. In fact I didnt like HOI1 vanillia too much (played it only with CORE), HOI2 is pretty good right out of the box (in my opinion), so I hope the CORE team will again deliver a great piece of work

So provided HOI2 implements b and c by next July it will have matched WiTP?ORIGINAL: Mr.Frag
a) WitP *does* have a windowed mode.

Developers make many bizarre decisions, but your "FACT" is simply a subjective desire, as subjective perhaps as many of the issues expressed in the WiTP forum which you have taken such exception to.Funny how people get so emotional about stating FACTS. Second, how much RAM did 4 WitPs at once take? That has to slow a system down.

Not that much, I have a fair chunk of it [;)] I think I can handle about 10 without swapping too much.
RE: hoi2 ?
The issue with monitors, resolutions and graphics had me remembering that I bought an upgraded card way back in the early 90's just to play Atomic Games DDay.. cannot at this time remember if the company was even atomic at first, but recently it was newer games needing direct x 9.0 and higher,.. ok out with my older Nvidea and in with ati...
OOPS.. ati doesn't support fog tables for Combat missions... and on and on it goes..
I agree having the ability to window is a nice feature.. I would like to be able to window the Map and another break-out screen,,
and I agree that designing a game with a set resolution is silly...
and poor me my older 48' super duper Mitzubishi tv is hard locked too... no high res games there boo hoo
and trrust me I really tried, and was moderately successfull with combat mission at 640 x 480
So where did this start.. oh yeh.. HOI was just a terrible game on so many levels for so many of us... and HOI2 seems to be a 100 % reversal of the former.
This last game will be a winner... and I really like turn based games much more....
