Well, things DID appear to have picked up last time i was in the state (June). And, as i said, housing/property prices have about tripled. I usually pick up those freebee real estate books just to check things out. Stuff that was going for $40,000 a couple of years ago (small farms in the boonies) are now going for $150 - $250K. I was astonished.

Possibly this has to do with recovery of the Japanese economy. Japanese tourism is very big there - it is cheaper to fly from Tokyo to Hawaii, play a round of golf, then fly back than it is to play a round in Tokyo. Hawaii has some truly nice golf courses (not that i play, but they are quite famous from what i read).

Just read the book, there is no human being with more experience repairing Shermans than this guy. I did not call them Deathtraps, the author did.

One other thing in the book. His division had all the Pershings in Germany in the later part of the war. There were 3.

(but I will just add ...that I was so absolutely obsessed with THIS subject - to the point of talking to tank experts from Europe, having my congressman get the US Army to send me their own studies and data on the M4 medium series, and going to the university to check out books on the physics of armor and armor penetration - I'm honestly not expecting to find much new...BUT - SALUTE! my friend!)[:)]

Actually your obsession with the subject is a really good reason to read this guy. The book was published in 1998 so it is relatively new materail on the subject. The perspective is fascinating, because this guy saw nearly all the damaged Shermans of the 3rd armored division. You won't learn much new about the tank, except maybe 3rd armored battlefield modifications, but you will learn about the tank in action. The Author's name is Belton Y. Cooper.

lol....yes, one night while walking back from a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe we passed a real estate office which had it's offerings posted on the window. Wheeeeesh.....the prices being asked just for a condo/studio!!!! [X(] [X(] [X(] [X(]

Yup....lots of Japanese tourists there. No problem....except when driving because the Japanese tourists who rent cars in Hawaii drive like ther're in Tokyo (which from what i've heard from my GF who's been to Tokyo, is a scary thing to behold)

You gotta be kidding!!![:D] blinking signal means "speed up to close the gap so that b@st@rd wount get in". In Vancouver we change lanes without giving signal for this very reason.

Some "challenged" people are driving suburbans or silverados in city. Their motto is "shoulder checks are for whimps". Guess what? Everybody lets them in.

How much of that is tax of some sort? I think that only 1/3 of the price in the US is tax, depending on the locality. Some state/county/city taxes are added to the federal tax, but in general it is approximately 80 cents per gallon around me, tax wise.
