The US choose to relocate the fleet to Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor? Sounds like a good name for a film...
A film named Pearl Harbor must be great. With such a historical background, and events, a movie about it can't go wrong.

----

US relocating the fleet to Pearl Harbor could be taken as a sign for Japan that it might be time to DOW USA soon.

A Hollywood movie set in the Hawaiian islands Between the titles "Pearl Harbor" or "Tora! Tora! Tora!"? My money is on the movie with the most closeups of nurses. Doing nurse things and such. Oh and some romance. Can't be in the Hawaiian islands without romance.

"Tora! Tora! Tora!" sounds like an advertisement for some kind of sushi.

Sushi or nurses? Which is it? [;)]

I just hope that if they ever make a film called Pearl Harbor they use quality dialogue. I'm thinking something along the lines of:

"I think World War II just started".

or

"Do you ever wonder if this war's going to catch up with us?"

or

"You died Rafe. So did I".

I mean I'm welling up here.....

Just out of curiosity, how many fighter units have you kept back to guard the Reich and France from the strategic bombers?

I am really finding this annoying from the standpoint that I have 6 fighters (4 109, 2 110) and still can't get coverage against the strategic attacks. Its not like I have sent a lot of fighters off to Russia either and I have made a pretty big investment in the Luftwaffe and didn't take very many losses at all in the battle for France.

I read someplace there is some discussion about new interception rules where bombers go 4 hexes at a time and the 4th hex is a potential interception point. I think this may be a big help and solution to the issue since old slow bombers can pass over perfectly fine fighters on the way to bomb a factory that is out of intercept range.

Just wondering if anyone else house rules this. Obviously it can't be fixed that easily in MWiF and there are more important things to look after.

Sorry for the slight derail. [;)]

I'd like to touch on this briefly.

The entire game its a dilemma. Front line fighters or Air defense of factories/resources. The degree is different for each game. As warspite1, pointed out, his choice is easy. Not much in the way of bombers allows a conscience free of worry. Until the bomber shows up.

When setting up for an Air Defense, my priority are the following cities. Berlin, Hamburg, Essen, Hanover, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Metz. From this core its expanded on. If playing the oil option. The oil resources are added to the core.

All of those cities have 1 thing in common. If a bomber of 1 strength point attacks and is not intercepted and rolls a 10 to 11 you lost 2 factors. That can't happen at a 1 factory/resource hex.

Over time it all depends on how aggressive the CW player is in pursuing a bombing campaign.

Good writing has that effect. Same as when the police opened up a couple of cans of tear gas in the neighborhood.
Sometimes i can't tell the difference.

"further twelve, multi-barrelled rocket launchers for close-range defence."

AA _rockets_ in WWII? I did not know that. The things you learn playing this game…….thanks!

"Tora! Tora! Tora!" is one of the greatest movie lines ever, whatchutalkinbout Willis? I think that line is why I play World in Flames today. So when the red pieces have their greatest moment of glory, I get to say it to my humbled opponent! It is a way more fun line than "climb Mount Tanaka"

There is an option for en-route aircraft interception in paper World in Flames. It is not commonly played, many think it is a time waster. I have always played with it, and generally seen it used just a few times a game usually. Works fine. Would not be completely simple on the computer, but not completely impossible either.

I find strategic bombing in the game to be the most devastating to …. the Chinese.

The weather has ended the possibility of further Naval Air attacks on the Med convoys for this impulse, but the Italians put three subs to sea in the Western Med (to go with the one they left there last turn).

The dice rolls are 9 and 8 for the Axis and Allies respectively and there will be no combat this impulse as a result.

Meanwhile in southern China, the Japanese begin the trek west and south as part of operations to push further into China and begin preparations for the attack in the Philippines and beyond...

The Allies turn now and its time for some shuffling of units.

Having given the order to send the Pacific Fleet to Pearl, the first of the naval units move to Hawaii - Pennsylvania, Arizona and Oklahoma are the first to arrive.

I have a light blue Swordfish on Ark Royal, which is a waste. So in the rebase phase I remove it and place in Gibraltar. Let's see if that works next go.

The only mission a carrier plane not on a carrier may perform is a rebase mission.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

What I was referring to was whether the program would recognise what I was doing and execute it properly i.e. re-basing from the carrier to land.

I am pleased to say it did and Ark Royal sailed, empty, the next turn to pick up a more appropriate aircraft.

I have had one AAR ended because of carrier aircraft so you must excuse my nervousness where these units are involved!

Yeah, I have done some shuffling of air units on carriers as well on the Jan/Feb turn (shrinkage provides more size and planes can be moved around allowing some carriers to head home for fresh planes). I had the same caution as Bob, based on his mention of having this end a game for him.

Back to the Axis now and the weather in the Mediterranean has eased slightly - its Rain - so aircraft can fly once more. The order goes out to the RA and Fliegerkorps X.

The Axis are asked if they want to initiate combat in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean sea zones. The answer of course if yes to both.

The bring a second flying boat to the Eastern Mediterranean, and the CW respond with a Hurricane fighter flying over the convoy (0 box) and a flying boat of their own in the 3 box to try and limit surprise.

Throws of 4 and 7 mean that no combat is possible this impulse.

To the western end of the Med now, and the Axis send in reinforcements in the shape of an Italian SM.79bis. The CW respond as before with a fighter flying CAP over the convoy and a Sunderland to try and minimise surprise effects.

Given what happened in France, the Axis are loath to trust to the air war dice god. They therefore choose to attack with the subs only.

I am amazed. I thought it would be something of a turkey shoot given the lack of escorts, but instead, the Italian submarine force has been hurt with two of the four attackers damaged and one 1/2 abort.

So what can the subs do in response?

Well they destroy 1, damage 1 and abort 2. I do not know if these are counters or convoy points though. I was not asked to choose - the computer went straight into the dice throws??

The sides have to decide whether to stick around. Both say yes. The Luftwaffe now bring in the big guns. The Me-109 attached to Fliegerkorps X is flown to the 0 box....

Sadly for the Axis, neither search roll was successful.

The rest of the turn saw the Japanese manoeuvre in China but the weather ends any hopes for further attacks. Units begin the march into Indo-China as Japan begins to think about war against the evil, decadent, Western Democracies "Mwahahahahahahaha!!" [Alright Tojo, zip it]

Back to the Allies and its a case of:

USA: Minneapolis, Houston and North Carolina sail for Pearl.
CW: The TRS are too few and too scattered. They need aircraft in the Med and there is no means to get them there [:@]

The CW are then asked if they want to initiate combat in the two contested Mediterranean sea zones. I didn't think this would happen as nothing new had occurred in those zones, but anyway...

Obviously the Western Med is a no no, but in the Eastern half, the CW decide to take a chance on the basis they have the better quality fighter. The Italians bring another 4-quality fighter to the party (0 box).

It does not matter, throws of 8 and 10!! ensure that once again this part of the Mediterranean remains a fighting-free zone...

There is no chance of Strategic Bombing in Snow - Bomber Harris is therefore unable to order his trusty Hampden and Wellington units into the air for their regular trip to Essen.

A 2 is then thrown and the turn ends...
