7 May, 1954

French forces at Điện Biên Phủ surrendered to the Viet Minh. 11,721 soldiers of the French army surrendered, many of them wounded. Most of the soldiers were from the French Foreign Legion or French colonial possessions in Africa and Indochina. 4,148 prisoners were repatriated later in 1954. Most of the others are presumed to have died in captivity although the fate of 3,013 Vietnamese serving in the French army and captured at Điện Biên Phủ is unknown.

The French suffered about 9,000 dead, wounded, and missing in the battle. The French estimated that the Viet Minh suffered 23,000 dead and wounded.  The Viet Minh claimed that they had only 9,000 casualties.

The United States was paying 80 percent of the cost of the French war against the Viet Minh.

The Battle of Điện Biên Phủ was decisive. The war ended shortly afterward, and the 1954 Geneva Accords were signed. France agreed to withdraw its forces from all its colonies in French Indochina, while stipulating that Vietnam would be temporarily divided at the 17th parallel, with control of the north given to the Viet Minh as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh, and the south becoming the State of Vietnam, nominally under Emperor Bảo Đại, preventing Ho Chi Minh from gaining control of the entire country.

8 May, 1957

On an official visit to the United States, President Diệm arrived at noon on May 8 at the National Airport in Washington, D.C. aboard the plane of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Columbine III, a silver Lockheed Constellation. Diệm was received at the airport by Eisenhower, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Nathan Twining. It was only the second time that Eisenhower had greeted a visitor at the airport.

9 May, 1965

Construction began on what would become the Chu Lai Air Base in South Vietnam, as a unit of the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion, NMCB-10, began the task of putting in the first combat zone "Short Airfield for Tactical Support" (SATS). The team would have a 4,000 feet (1,200 m) runway in place within 23 days and the first airplanes A-4 Skyhawks from VMA-225 and VMA-311 would land on 1 June and launched their first airstrike later that day.

10 May, 1955

During three days of talks in Paris among U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, French Prime Minister Edgar Faure [pictured below], and the British, Faure proposed that both the U.S. and France withdraw from Vietnam because "Diệm is leading to a catastrophe." Dulles did not agree and indicated that the U.S. would continue to support Diệm—even if that support caused the French to withdraw from South Vietnam. At this conference, in the words of historian Seth Jacobs, Vietnam became "America's war" rather than France's.

The 3d Brigade, 25th Infantry Division operating from LZ OASIS will launch a campaign along the Cambodian border to prevent a sortie from then 1st PAVN Division and a possible attack of the CIDG Camps at Plei Djereng, Duc Co and Plei Me. Keeping one of its battalion in reserve at OASIS, the brigade will push its other two maneuver units to the southwest in the direction of the Ia Drang Valley. The 2d and 3d Brigades of the 1st Cavalry Division will reinforce if needed.

11 May, 1961

Vice President Lyndon Johnson arrived in South Vietnam for a three-day visit. Johnson's instructions were to "get across to President Diệm our confidence in him as a man of great stature." Johnson called Diệm "the Winston Churchill of Southeast Asia." Johnson also delivered a letter from Kennedy which approved an increase in the ARVN from 150,000 to 170,000 soldiers and said that the United States "was prepared to consider a further increase." In a significant change from the policy of Ambassador Durbrow and the Eisenhower Administration, U.S. funding for the increase in military aid was not conditioned on the Diệm government undertaking social and economic reforms. Diệm, however, declined Kennedy's offer to introduce American combat troops into South Vietnam saying that it would be a propaganda victory for the VC.

On his return to Washington Johnson noted the disaffection of the Vietnamese people with Diệm but concluded that the "existing government in Saigon is the only realistic alternative to Viet Minh [VC] control."

Kennedy issued National Security Action Memorandum - 52 which called for a study of increasing the ARVN from 170,000 to 200,000; expanded MAAG responsibilities to include aid to the Civil Guard and Self Defense Corps; authorized sending 400 Special Forces soldiers to South Vietnam covertly to train ARVN; approved covert and intelligence operations in both North and South Vietnam; and proposed actions to improve relations between President Diem and the U.S.

The 1st Cavalry Division with its 3d Brigade will return to Binh Dinh Province with operation DAVY CROCKETT/BINH PHU 3 and sweep the coastal plain between Bong Son and Sa Huynh where the 22d PAVN Regiment has been detected again. The 3rd ARVN ACR will block Highway 1 to the south.

8-11 May
Operation AKRON, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division search and destroy 10km N of Cu Chi.

9-14 May
Operation MONTGOMERY/LIEN KET 40, 1/7, 2/7 Marines, 2d and 5th VNMC search and destroy in Quang Ngai Province.

10-12 May
Operation WAYNE, 1/1, 3/4 Marines search and destroy 10 miles south of Phu Bai, Phu Loc district.

10 May-31 Jul.
MISSION: Operation PAUL REVERE I begins. The 3d Brigade, 25th Infantry Division operating from LZ OASIS will launch a campaign along the Cambodian border to prevent a sortie from then 1st PAVN Division and a possible attack of the CIDG Camps at Plei Djereng, Duc Co and Plei Me. Keeping one of its battalion in reserve at OASIS, the brigade will push its other two maneuver units to the southwest in the direction of the Ia Drang Valley. The 2d and 3d Brigades of the 1st Cavalry Division will reinforce if needed.
