AD are used to support destroyers in port.

AKE are used to support BBs and other "big boys" (and small guys too) in ports that otherwise aren't big enough to replenish BBs.

If memory serves, AE are used like AKE through 1944, but in 1945 they will replenish ships at sea.

Is there a minimum port size required for an AKE to resupply?

I think there is since sometimes one can't replenish the big boys. On the other hand having a number of naval squads tend to help too,

It isn't so much about port size but rather the cargo capacity of the AKE. If the AKE is not rearming a particular ship, check

(a) the cargo capacity of the AKE
(b) whether the AKE is fully loaded with supplies
(c) the amount of supplies neccessary to rearm the particular weapon in question.

If the ake is large enough it will reload a couple of BBs a turn in a size two port.

No, but the AKE must have enough capacity for the larger ships. I think it is in the manual.

Your memory serves you well re p. 276: "underway rearming is only available late in the war," but as for how late ...

I'm as positive as my mind permits me to be (which means that I'm positive, but my wife would still wonder if I was right) that AEs can be used at sea in 1945.
