Allied TB question

Post by Lecivius »

What type of air frames can the allies use for carrying torps? In the latest betas, I discovered Beauforts no loger carry them. I am in mid 42 now, and all I know of are the biplanes & Devestators. Avengers will soon start trickling in, but what other types can I hope to have to try to stem the BB's roaming at will?

Some Beaufort carry torps, some don't. The Beaufort I units were actually some of the most experienced in the RAF. They had veterans of the Channel Dash and fighting around Malta. The Beaufort I's in the Indian Ocean area were delayed in the Med to help stem the tide there before moving the Far East. In the FE, they never dropped a torp in anger.

Some Beaufort models didn't have torpedo equipment in the field, so they are not torpedo capable in game.

The PBY is torpedo capable, though it's also very vulnerable. Even against poorly defended targets you will see some flak losses and the replacement rate is very low. Using them heavily for torpedo work in the early going will result in patrol units being less than full strength for a year or more.

The Australian Beaufort V cannot use torpedoes. If you are in 42, then this is what you are seeing. Also, The British, but not the Aussie< Beaufighter X can carry a torpedo. The Barracuda comes on around 1944. It is classed as a DB but carries a torpedo.

The Australian Beaufort V cannot use torpedoes.

Which is rather interesting since my sources say they can and IRL the first Australian torpedo attack was conducted in September 1942 by No.100 Squadron RAAF with Beaufort V aircraft after several months of working up to operational status (achieved 06/42).

I am aware the first SIX Beaufort aircraft were prematurely delivered 'sans armament' to the RAF in Singapore in Dec 41 but this would not explain why they would give this version bombs only. Apart from the No.100 Squadron aircraft the rest of the Beaufort V's went to OCUs so I suspect that the designers wanted to delay torpedo attacks until the Beaufort VIII (which abstracts several other versions as well) comes on-line in 10/42 game time.
Cheers,
Reg.

Keeping players from over using torpedoes is difficult. Land based air just didn't use them anywhere near as often as they can be used in game.
