Aircraft "agility"

Post by ExMachina »

When I recently engaged a single F16 with guns from my frigate (I exhausted all my RIM-7's), the A/C evaded every salvo (130 of them concurrently!), each time with maximum agility. That just seems too perfect.

I know it's already in the poll for potential changes in the future, but I was curious as to what people thought would be a good remedy for what seems to be overly-optimistic model of aircraft evasiveness?

Would it be a probability thing where agility would vary from endgame calculation to endgame calculation? Would agility invariably degrade over time (pilot fatigue/pilot overload)? Would there be an additional factor of pilot skill? I'm interested to know what are you all thinking on this.

The solution we are considering revolves around the concept of bleeding energy (primarily kinematic but also potential) at every evasion, gradually recovering it with enough time, so there is an incentive to attack a unit with successive blows in order to exhaust its ability to evade.

Cool. I like that idea a lot. Under that model, would fighters with directed thrust be treated any differently than conventional ones?

Thrust vectoring doesn't really help with recovering depleted energy; in fact, by over-using it you will probably bleed energy much faster (if you've played DID's F-22ADF/TAW you probably remember that it was not a good idea to have TV activated all the time).

We do model super-maneuverability (from TV, canards and advanced flight control systems) in the DB and award extra turning capability (particularly in the supersonic regime) to the aircraft that use it. Supersonic breakaway right after launching AAMs is a pretty typical BVR tactic.

I like this idea a lot. Any plans for aspect penalties?
