RE: The meaning of pockets
<t> It is kinda funny that everyone is describing how to destroy encircled, "out of supply" units by listing how to stack bonuses using many different unit types. The way everyone is talking you would think we were trying to destroy some sort of fortress hex. The even "funnier" thing is that encircl...

RE: Experienced wargamers will find much to love in it!... or not.
<t> -Surrounding enemy ships to trap them is very useful, especially the high value ships or ships you just cant get killed in that turn. Often times I will attack, sink a few ships, then surround the remaining ships to be attacked the next turn.<br/> <br/> -Baiting is another great tactic. I wrote ...

RE: Research speed
<t> I loaded up one of my old saves to check the research and unit pools of the allies (I only have played axis so far). <br/> <br/> The major unit pools as of June 28, 1942 - British can still build 2 armies and 3 tanks, but no corps; the Russians have maxed out their corps/armies/tanks (they have ...

RE: Research speed
<t> Yes the research is either too fast, doesn't cost enough mpp, or there is just too much mpp in the game. Or it is a combination of all of those factors. If, for example, the Germans have three levels of infantry weapons (0,1,2) to last the whole game until 1945, does that mean if you have infant...

RE: Best strategy for the German navy
<t> As others have said, I too tend to keep the German navy (subs included) in the Baltic at least until France falls, usually longer. I don't boost the German navy much, but I do buy a few more destroyers and some maritime bombers. In most of 1941, I only leave the Baltic to pick off Allied ships t...

RE: Aviation Units and Hex Occupation
<t> Air units can absolutely defend a hex for a short amount of time. Many times I have used air units to plug gaps in my line, they act like paratroopers that are always ready to jump (they are always ready to bomb, "jump" into a gap, and move "operationally" because of their movement points). I ha...

RE: Supply of surrounded resources
<t> Yes, this sort of "every town is a supplied fort" could be changed, or maybe reduce the supply for encircled cities to 1 supply (I think that would be a good first step). And units should not be able to reinforce while encircled. There needs to be some sort of attrition or wearing down for units...

RE: How is the AI?
<t> I agree with Polonthi, the AI is greatest on the small scale. What this AI does best is manage single attacks and shuffle units. I was amazed at how well the AI shuffles units in north Africa (very narrow frontage). The strategic AI will not surprise you with its creativity, but on the other han...

RE: First thoughts + bugs? + wishlist
<t> You are right that to win at this game I can/should choose to do some things and not others. I can choose not to invade smaller countries, I can choose not to follow a rough historical timelines, I can choose not to help my allies, I can choose not research technologies that will not help me def...

RE: First thoughts + bugs? + wishlist
<t> Once again, I want to stress Pinsk is just an example. I don't care about the city of Pinsk, it is not part of my strategic plan. I was just using it as an example. Yes, Pinsk did eventually regain supply for a time, after my 3 corps and 1 army couldn't break it, after a while I had to move the ...

RE: First thoughts + bugs? + wishlist
<t> Now I am up to summer 1942. <br/> <br/> The Russians have gone on the offensive, but Pinsk still remains. I brought up Pinsk earlier, not because I was worried about the path through the Pripyt marshes, but because it was hard to clear. The maximum forces I had against it was 1 German army, 1 Ge...

RE: First thoughts + bugs? + wishlist
<t> I restarted my save from an earlier save to try some new tactics. You mention using tactical bombers because they are better. I am using my, more important, tactical bombers for the invasion of Russia. I was able to capture Malta a lot quicker by purposely bombing the port hexes. And the AI deci...

RE: First thoughts + bugs? + wishlist
<t> During the Malta attack, I was too scared to leave the Italian navy surrounding the island. I would bombard with every heavy ship every turn and bomb every turn, but I could not eliminate the British AA unit. At best, my bombers could only cause 1 damage per turn (for a total of 3 damage each tu...

<t> First off, I love old school, hex based, turn based, strategy games. I consider NATO counters a must have too. Needless to say, I love this game, but there are some things I don't like.<br/> <br/> A lot of issues I have with the game did not become apparent until I invaded Russia. As I write thi...

RE: Playing as Soviets - German AI... problems
<t> One other thing I forgot to mention in my first post is that the German AI never (I mean NEVER) moved any Finish units. Not one hex. As a joke, I didn't move any of my units on the border either. I didn't want to provoke them ( [;)] ).<br/> <br/> The command range is a problem for the player but...

Haha, I am playing as the soviets in the picture, you can see my HQs on top my stacks of units at Minsk. The AI is playing the Germans.
Even if HQ position doesn't really matter, I tend to role-play with my HQs and position them in logical spots.

RE: Playing as Soviets - German AI... problems
<r> Yes, there is a supply layer, but as long as there are clear hexes it is possible to get supply at extreme distances. The game lumps all non panzer group units into the same supply mechanism. I have a picture posted , I hope it turns out. In the pic you can see 6th army has a unit near Kursk, wh...

Playing as Soviets - German AI... problems
<t> I finally won as Germans so I decided to play as the Russians, and this has lead to some very weird, bordering on bug-like moves on their part.<br/> <br/> I have it set to normal/normal, historical off, FOW off, Geneva conventions off.<br/> <br/> 1. RE: How is everyone's campaign progress compared to historical?
<r> Restarted my campaign, again as Germans. I tried for a more aggressive first turn. Panzer group still try to break out, but I send my infantry divisions to attack wildly on the first turn. Due to first turn bonuses I am surprised what a single infantry division can do. <br/> <br/> Right now I ha...

How is everyone's campaign progress compared to historical?
<t> I am interested to hear how everyone is progressing compared to the historical progress of Barbarossa. That is a good test for how well the game is made.<br/> <br/> In my own first serious try, my Germans have advance well, but on my July 24 turn my panzers in AGC have stopped 3 hexes from the P...
