May I ask what VR stands for?


The full term is VRF. It stands for Navy Ferry Squadron. You could also think of the "R" standing for "reserve" if that helps you remember. These are special naval air units stationed on some escort carriers and usable as a source of replacement aircraft for ...

Best museum I've been to in a while was Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA (near Dulles Airport).

From mid-1944 (if not earlier) until the end of the war USN carrier task force size was close to 25 ships. They might have figured the extra AA was worth the increased chance of collisions. Regarding your original question about resources on what unit went where during the war this map is pretty good on showing the deployment of US Army divisions anyway. No Marine divisions shown unfortunately. Japanese unit information is always a bit harder to find but maybe there's a good Japanese ...
