Re: minor correction

You want to be careful not to conflate 2 things: the game's requirements for diplomatically ensuring Italy remains at peace, and strategic requirements to try to defend Egypt and the Middle East once Italy is in.

The former is 6 units in Egypt. Creating divisions out of corps helps with that. That ...

Fixed Weather Mod 1.01

I got my perl code to work and was able to automatically modify weather chances in the data of the scn file. Basically each month has 100% chance of one weather. The details are in the README in the zip file.

Since the script is automated, it is pretty easy to run it against other scenarios. I will ...

Re: Trying to mod weather chances

I was able to modify the byte values, write out a changed version of the scn file, and read it back into the editor and see my new values. The actual mod will have to wait for another day.

my $f = shift @ARGV;
my $location = shift @ARGV || 0;
my $numbytes = shift @ARGV || 100100100;

open(IN,$f ...

Re: Trying to mod weather chances

I looked at the weatherMap.dat file, and the entire file has no byte values larger than 10, implying that it is just a big grid of what weather zone each hex is in.

So, I tried saving my scenario (the big .scn file), then modifying the weather in zone 1 in July to be 77% rain, and then saving it ...

Did the fixed Soviet defense values from this thread

make it into this update?

Trying to mod weather chances

The editor has a very nice UI where you can change the likelihood of each type of weather in each weather zone. That is fine, and I could sit and click my mouse many times to bump up/down the %ages as I want. However, doing that for 12 zones x 12 months will get tedious. I code in perl and other ...

Re: new russia

It is my impression from the pinned Update Scenario thread:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10690&t=403397

that Alvaro considers bumping up the Soviet defense values as more of a bug fix than a balance adjustment. It sounds to me like the change will be rolled into the next ...

Re: So how are the Russians now?

This map mod looks very nifty but shouldnt all this interesting info be in a thread in the Mods folder?

Also, do you have any plans to modify the weather probabilities?

The Trouble with Variable Weather

History buff wargamers like to argue about how likely it is to snow in Minsk or Pinsk in October or November, but the basic problem with variable weather in Warplan and in every ww2 game I can think of is much more fundamental. Every WW2 IGO-YUGO game has a turn sequence that looks like this:

1 ...

Re: aaminoff (Allies) first game vs Boldairade (Axis) - Boldairade welcome

The British Med fleet was unable to prevent supply getting through to the significant Axis forces in Syria, which were advancing on Egypt against token opposition. I was going to lose both FNA and the Middle East, so I conceded this game.

Re: aaminoff (Allies) first game vs Boldairade (Axis) - no Boldairade for now

The turn after what I posted above, the Axis invaded an undefended port in Syria. They also sortied the Bismarck and surface fleet, which I am less worried about even though my LBA, 2CVs, a sub, and a surface fleet all failed to find them.

I am suspecting that I drew down my forces in Egypt too ...

aaminoff (Allies) first game vs Boldairade (Axis) - Boldairade welcome

This will be less of a AAR in the model seen in other AARs in this forum and more just general description + me asking for advice. It is my first game against a human opponent. Enjoying it a lot!

This is the vanilla 1939 scenario. We got the game started without being able to incorporate the new ...

Re: Noob questions about concrete stuff and design philosophy

And are we sure that you have to be on a convoy hex or is any ocean hex in range good enough?

You can test this by looking at the % you get in the reports if I remember...
I tested and yes indeed, a fleet has to be on a convoy route (any convoy route) to provide the bonus.

Re: Noob questions about concrete stuff and design philosophy

I want to make sure I am understanding the BoA correctly. (It is very cool that WarPlan is the only grand-strategic WW2 game I know of that tries to include the BoA)

There is a discontinuity between 9 and 10 escorts - 9 escorts protect 45 merchants while 10 escorts protect *all* merchants. For this ...

That explains it. boldairade and I wanted to start a game with me as Allies. Regardless of whether he started the game or I did, with him as Axis it used his scenario files, which were not updated.

Re: So how are the Russians now?

How are you able to get the new Soviet defense values in multiplayer? Having copied in the new files, when I create a game in the multiplayer lobby using the Europe 1939 scenario, I see the lower Soviet def values, whereas if I create a local game, the new def values appear.
