Use the sector inventory before you zoom into the map. The DJ's stuff you order is available in there, and you can also use it to swap between your merc and any you hired.

Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem like 2 gun fu was implemented, so ambidextrous would seem like another non useable one.

I had a related problem.  After talking to the tribal chief and not agreeing to help him, my squad wasn't able to leave the sector.  There were no hostiles.
