RE: Unity of Command Red Turn Berlin Offensive

<r> Focus on the eastern hex first - notice that it's the supply source, and also it has the flak unit. So if you can take that hex, the TigerII unit in the objective hex will be out of supply, and also vulnerable to air attack (although you do risk turning the city into ruins as well...)<br/>

RE: The little ship that could.

<t> No doubt the real IJN felt the same way... consider second half of 1944: us subs sank 2 CVs at Phillipine Sea (Taiho, Shokaku), then 2 more in November/December (Shinano, Unryu), and just for kicks they sank 2 CVEs as well during the same period (Taiyo, Unyo). Plus Battleship Kongo in November ...

RE: Small things, HUGE consequences

Yikes - ILR CV Taiho was done in by a single torpedo from SS Albacore. I wonder if she'll prove more resilient in this alternate reality.

(And can you imagine the howls of protest from players if a modern CV was sunk by a single torpedo in the game...)

RE: The Elephant Vanishes :: obvert (J) vs Historiker (A)

<t> You know, Nagumo historically expected to lose half his force attacking Pearl Harbor. So this might be the first game to be played out as if his expectations had come true.<br/>
<br/>
It's a sign of just how much Japan underestimated the Allies that they expected win even if they had lost half ...

RE: carrier Battle!

<t> Ouch. I confess to being a bit disappointed that the result wasn't a bit more balanced ... seems to me the Americans got a raw deal on their airstrikes - surely there should have been a few hits in the lot? Even against strong CAP, historically carrier strikes almost always drew blood - this ...

RE: SWPAC SUMMER 1943 OFFENSIVE

<t> I've been lurking here for some time, trying to decide whether to buy the game. After reading your report of the US CVEs being destroyed in broad daylight under the noses of an aggressive and superior US BB taskforce, I think I'll give it a pass. There's just too much wonky about the game engine ...

RE: Storm Over Ambon

<t> Not that hard to imagine a story where the Japanese commander decided to go the direction he did. Maybe a false sighting of a major allied surface TF between Ceram and Namlea? There were Japanese BBs there, and Allied BBs had been in the area recently. A mistaken search report (reinforced by the ...
