Re: Switching Float Planes on Subs

radar on subs.... surface radar is only one hex, but air radar sweeps wider and can detect air at greater ranges, thus "early" warning...

I think that you are incorrect. I do believe that radar only works within the hex but a greater range than one hex increases the odds for detection. But ...

Re: Setting pilots to not fly missions

You are welcome.

Depending upon his other stats such as leadership, you might want to have him either command a training unit or have him as a pilot/instructor in a training unit. The trainees will train faster, they tend to gain experience and skill up to the average +5 in the unit. So by ...

Re: Setting pilots to not fly missions

The computer may fly them anyway. It would be better to not have a commander who is also a pilot in the unit.

That is a lot of un budgeted PP expenditure
Thanks for the prompt response, RangerJoe

Setting pilots to not fly missions

I seem to recall that to avoid pilot commanders being killed and need to be replaced frequently, I set him to group reserve.

I have been informed that those pilots that come in like that, come in from the editor and apparently it is when those actual pilots historically came into those units....

I would phrase this as "come in from the scenario developer" ... but yes, it is how you can get a level of historical ...

Thanks LST & Pax for the quick responses. Not seeking to exploit these gaps, just seeking clarifications.

Totally understood. And note, gamey only against the AI. In a PBEM, it would either be allowed or covered in an HR. Truthfully though, I have never noticed it come up in an HR ....

Re: Japan ASW assets

Etorofu/Mikura 6 DC launchers
TypeC/D 7 launchers
Ukuru 7 > 9 launchers

I guess that makes them "almost" the same in ASW capability, but the later ones will have very short lifespans in what I presume to be Allied infested waters

Thank you for the prompt reply. What about the Etorofu and Mikuma class, how do they rank (in ASW ability) relative to the Ukuru class?

Japan ASW assets

I am going through some detailed naval planning for my retirement game.
Japan has several late war E class ships, I listed all those carrying Type 2 DC:
Ukuru
Type D
Type C
Can some kind soul help me rank them in terms of ASW effectiveness? Which is the one that was labeled "Super E?"

Quick clarification on victory points:

Extract from manual

Japanese for bombing industry in North America, Australia, and/or Hawaii.

Mainland Japan here refers to

Thanks, I am fighting on to gather data for a possible next game one day.
Having got this far into 1944 I want to see what the art of the possible is from here, and still hope to get into 1945.

Re: Moving TRACOM pilots to training units in field

On thing does not make sense to me in all this, feel like I am missing something obvious:

How do you train up skills without training XP? I thought XP will always get trained?
If XP is always going to be trained, no matter the training mission, you will always get pilots in 50 range until you ...

Re: Moving TRACOM pilots to training units in field

My understanding on-map training are below:

1. We should differentiate XP from skill levels. A fighter pilot can have 70 XP, 65 Air, 60 Def.
2. Training for pilots under 50 XP is faster, getting the benefit of squadron average for the relevant SKILL, if it is applicable
3. Lower XP pilots gets ...
