Re: US Mech inf Dragon ATGM

Oh, no, no, NO!

OK, deep breath.

That just isn't how you do it. The sector of fire for a Dragon is NOT the same as that of the rest of the squad. Recognizing that, we split it off so if the rifle squad gets targeted, the Dragon is excluded. Likewise, if the Dragon fires and triggers return fire ...

Re: Rethinking NATO’s defense strategy

Love your After Action Reviews and I hope you keep them coming!

So, having been a US mech inf small unit leader in this time-frame, I very much relate to this scenario from many personal experiences in graded exercise at maneuver training centers.

1. Enduring artillery preparatory fires is best ...

Re: Reconnaissance units survivability

Good points, RadOptics.

If you are expecting/trying to make contact with the enemy combat elements, you use a line combat element to make that contact. Bear in mind, when you make contact, both sides are most likely to shoot.

Both NATO and the WP saw this task pretty much the same way. The subtle ...

Re: Reconnaissance units survivability

I think it's helpful recast this as "how to conduct reconnaissance" as opposed to "how do I keep my weak reconnaissance units alive." But I want to first say something about your overall approach to conducting an attack.

Things go a lot better if you set yourself on a COA rather than deciding which ...

I will advocate for making these moveable in the context of a BP. Placing these is as important as positioning units.

Re: Not grasping "Force" & Missions

Concrete example using a WP regimental recon company consisting of the following::
1. Company HQ
2. Heavy recon plt (3 x IFV or 3 x tank)
3. Light recon plt (2 x BRDM)
4. Light recon plt (2 x BRDM)

If these are in the same Force, then, regardless of initial deployment, they will assemble together ...

Re: A more deliberate AI?

Necrothread, I know, but...

I think part of this is equipping the AI with a reactive capability, based on what it sees. Here's a very incomplete decision tree I am thinking of for an Advance Guard:

1. CRP makes contact
a. Enemy with no perceived anti-armor, CRP mows them down
b. Plt with anti ...

Re: Preventing AI Defenders from Moving.

OK, my sense is you're basically setting up a target array for a live fire range. Can you do that? Yes! Easy peasy? But it's grunt work, not skull work.

OK, here's the basics of the AI:

1. The AI always respects running battle plans. It's hands off!
2. For units not in a running battle plan, the ...

Re: US Division Engineers?

Hey Blackcloud6, lemme break it down like a shotgun (heh) Did this research before the Breach mission last summer at Origins Con.

Div Engr Bde (Heavy Div: HHD (staff dudes_
3 x Engr Bn (1 to each maneuver Bde)
3 x Engr Co (Typically, 1 per maneuver Bn, but mission dependent)
2 x Engr Plt, 1 x ...

Re: OPORD

I've been struggling with this.

I think the preamble, Paragraph I and Paragraph II out to be quite detailed.

We can omit, I think Paragraphs IV and V, as there's not much in the game mechanics for players to respond to. For Pro content, probably include for completeness.

Paragraph III is tricky ...

Re: FASCAM/ICM Loadouts

Not looking at code on this. Doing the US Campaign this week, the player had loadout of 16 rds of FASCAM per tube. So 96 rds per battery.

Dumping those in one hex made the lead unit pause long enough to get strongly whacked. Follow-on units paused, too. Big nut roll as the adjacent hexes were slow ...

Re: Map Size and Potential Battles

Fair warning: I have my Curmudgeon Hat on.

I honestly don't have much problem with map sizes nor numbers of units and the potential for bogging the game down. My entry assignment to our team was, using the antiquated Red Storm engine, to do a WW II prototype. The battle was the Leibstandarte at ...

Re: Off map artillery assets bug

This is long winded, as I want to explain the game and set the context for counter-fires in this era.

Game-wise, the off map artillery display shows firing units you can give missions to. It does not show everything that might fire missions to support you. Counter-fires, for US divisions, were ...

Re: Big Red One #1 - Resupply issues

I need to do more research, but my take is FARPs are not anything near mobile. On the roadmap is to be able to designate a unit as having a delay time associated with movement and be operational for battle function. In this case, it's a delay between arrival and when a helo unit can begin re-arming ...

TOW Jeeps: reaching back 40+ years now...

Signature: Spare tire mounted on the right side of the vehicle, so even with all the launcher stuff stowed, you knew what it was.

Heavier suspension, but still the micro-tight turning radius so you could snake between trees. Downside was that was a true ...

III US XXX was allocated to being the NORTHAG reserve corps. POMCUS in NL and BE. Ammo in BE, IIRC. So, 1CD would be part of Northern Storm, when we build it.

Stay tuned...

Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Southern Storm Livestream w/Jeff and Yogdog

Another successful fight today. For both of the first 2 battles in the Campaign, Yogdog has kept friendly casualties to around 15%, which has been good enough to regenerate all his combat power for the next missions, despite those being scant 4 hours or so of recovery time.

We discussed several key ...
