Well, this makes more sense. A few months back I was chasing a startup crash that I couldn't resolve.
Turns out I always turn off WMP ... so that's likely the problem. Wish I'd known about this then!

.NET doesn't seem to be anything which can be uninstalled on Win7 ... and I'm not sure how to go about repairing ...

Okay I'll uninstall and try it again in that order.

Nope, no mods. As far as I know all I did was download the patch through the launcher.

I'll uninstall it and then reinstall. Probably the easiest thing to do. I'll let you know how it goes.

I know it worked, as I played it quite a lot. I stopped for a bit, and at some point I applied the patch.
I think I never played it since I applied the patch though...

When I've got some construction ships in a Debris Field repairing some ships, if any other races repair a ship I end up with control over it.

Not that I'm complaining ... but shouldn't the race which does the repair get control of the ship? [;)]
