Re: Question: how far out should ship RWR's work?

Ah, I didn't know that OTH radars did some ionosphere bouncing tricks, so that explain why it could see behind hills and such: it's detecting from a high-ish angle. TIL!

I echo @Quark73: for OTH radars, won't ship-based ELINT detect those especially if there is enough energy to return to the source ...

Question: how far out should ship RWR's work?

I just ran a test to see how detectable a MRK Nanuchka I with active emissions is and how well fjords will hide a unit from radar detection and it has raised some questions. I placed a modern DDG 1000 Zumwalt with a AN/SLQ-32 ESM (500nm ELINT) and a P 960 Storm with a NO/SR-1A RWR (120nm) about 30nm ...

Ideas for Naval Search percentages for DBs/TBs in a US CVG

<t> Your dive bombers and torpedo bombers are your heavy hitters against the Japanese carrier groups, so having a lot of them available for naval strikes is important. But they are also some of your longer range units in the early years and need to spend some time performing naval search missions ...

RE: ELINT sensors not working on some USSR ships?

<t> I ran another test with more ships and found that most do not have working ELINT. E.g. Kalinin, Udaloy I, Mukha, Grisha, Ropucha II, Kara, and Krivak I. However, 4 seemed to have at least some working ELINT: Tarantul III 250nm, Sovermenny I 194nm, SSV Marshal Krylov 139nm, Nanuchka IV 99nm ...

[WAD] ELINT sensors not working on some USSR ships?

<t> In an effort to understand ELINT detection better, I created a simple test of having an E-2D Hawkeye Advanced fly towards a Kresta II while fully emitting its radar. I was surprised when the Kresta did not pick up the E-2D until it was visual. I changed the bird to an E-2C Hawkeye Basic and ...

Mind blown.

I had no idea that only naval units need/use fuel! Wow, that changes a few things. Thanks!

Advice wanted: getting fuel and supplies to Lunga and Tulagi

<t> I am playing the Guadalcanal scenario and have taken Lunga and Tulagi. I have also managed to drop off some supplies to each island, although they both have 0 fuel. But the Japanese obviously threaten future resupply operations with bombers from Rabaul along with numerous surface groups, subs ...

RE: Question: task force leaders and ship commanders

Thanks for the quick reply.

If you manually select a different Air Combat TF commander and CV commander, is it assumed that the Air Combat TF commander is riding on the carrier along with the CV commander?

Question: task force leaders and ship commanders

<t> Does an Air Combat task force leader ride on the flagship if the flagship commander is different? If not, where does the TF commander hang out?<br/>
<br/>
I found in my Guadalcanal game that I could switch my task force leader at port, but I could not find a way to reassign it so that the task ...

RE: Partially loading cargo

<t> I am understanding the logistics aspect of this game more based on your feedback and further forays into the manual and the forums.<br/>

It seems to me that you want to identify some key supply hubs and have your larger tankers and transports shuttle stuff there, in autopilot mode (i.e ...

Partially loading cargo

<t> Is there a way to partially load cargo (e.g. supplies, fuel, oil) onto transports? I am trying to figure out how to not have a large tanker or cargo transport strip a base of all of its resources or how to send smaller supply shipments to remote, under-supplied islands.<br/>

RE: Ground unit information - codes?

<t> Awesome, thanks!<br/>

BTW, is this actually documented somewhere, or did you learn it through the forums or deduce it on your own? I have found a few instances where the game uses abbreviations and codes yet the manual does not explain them. Perhaps it is because the game evolved faster ...

Ground unit information - codes?

<t> When you mouse over a friendly ground unit symbol, a pop-up displays the units in the hex. It displays a series of codes for the different squads, but I cannot find a definition of what these codes mean in the manual or on the forums. For example from manual p. 180:<br/>

<r> I am a little confused about search arcs and how they are represented in the game.<br/>

RE: ESM - am I doing something wrong?

<t> I ran another test, this time with a 1996 E-3B and 7 different Russian warships from roughly the same era. The E-3B behaved exactly as I would have expected - it passively detected emitting targets at 1.2 to 1.8 their radar range, including a Sovremenny.<br/>
