RE: Command: Desert Storm has been announced!

<r> I'm really looking forward to this, it's probably the war that I know the most about now. There were a lot of interesting aspects to Desert Storm and I'm curious to see if or how they're going to be handled in the scenarios. For instance:<br/>

RE: Toss bombing

<t> Respectfully, I don't believe climbing to 10000 ft in the game is a reasonable substitute for real-life toss-bombing tactics.<br/>
<br/>
First because in the game it takes an F-15E about 45 seconds to climb that high, which is a much longer exposure time than they would have in real-life.<br ...

RE: Toss bombing

<t> No prob. Yes I did reference some flight simulators, as part of the supporting evidence for my claim that contrary to some other posts in this thread, toss-bombing was actually a common tactic, not at all limited to nuclear bombs but also used for both dumb and smart conventional bombs, and ...

I'm very much aware of that, but I'm not sure how it's relevant to what I posted... I think you may have misunderstood me.

RE: Toss bombing

<r> Toss bombing was also a fairly normal delivery method for both dumb bombs and LGBs by the F-15E. On the Basra raid on the second night of Desert Storm, F-15Es hit a POL plant using toss bombing with Mk 82s, as described in Strike Eagle by William Smallwood, page 96:<br/>

RE: Admiral Nakhimov vs literally eveything the US Navy has

<t> If you used the default loadouts, the Burke will only have 36 short-range SAMs, so not too surprising if it gets overwhelmed. The Tico will have 32 long-range, 48 medium-range, and 24 short-range, and should give a better accounting for itself, but that's still only 104 missiles vs 80 supersonic ...

RE: Doubt About Phoenix Missile

<t> I just tried a quick test with a MiG-31 (1982 model with "Flash Dance [N-007 Zaslon]" radar) against an F-15C (1984 model with "AN/APG-63" radar) flying head-on toward each other. The MiG-31 detected the F-15C at 125 miles, or 73% of its max range. It was able to fire at 54 miles, so that part ...

E-8A JSTARS much more effective than E-8C JSTARS, and related radar questions...

<t> I was playing a scenario set in the late 1990s recently and noticed I was having a very hard time pinning down the exact location of some SA-10 sites. I had a U-2 with ASARS radar, an E-8C with the APY-7 AESA, and I even tried using the editor to add in some other planes with ground scanning ...

RE: Pre-Desert Storm Iraqi Air Force order of battle

<t> I just got my copy of the Gulf War Fact Book and unfortunately it's rather light reading by comparison to these other sources. It doesn't list Iraqi Air Force squadrons or basing. For what it's worth, here's what it has for the plane inventory:<br/>

RE: Stand alone Gulf war 1991 ( Shamal?) not as easy as thought)

<t> Challenge accepted; I just tried it and it wasn't all that hard, IMO. At the start of the scenario, I sent all 8x Intruders with GBU-12s against the H3 ammo revetments, escorted by Tomcats and all 5x of my HARM-armed Prowlers. No tankers needed. I took out the SA-6s at H3 and H2, and the SA-2 ...

RE: Stand alone Gulf war 1991 ( Shamal?) not as easy as thought)

<t> I've played Shamal a bunch from the USAF side but not much from the Navy side, I'll have to give it a try. Just looking at it briefly though, I think you have enough units, but you'll have to change their loadouts and play to their various strengths. Historically, the Iraqi IADS was crippled on ...

RE: Pre-Desert Storm Iraqi Air Force order of battle

<r> This is also something I looked for a while ago and couldn't find anything really definitive. As noted by TheOttoman above, The Gulf War Air Power Survey (GWAPS) vol. 5 has a table of the overall aircraft roles (e.g. fighters, bombers, etc.) and numbers, but it doesn't break it down any more. In ...

<r> <QUOTE><s>[quote]</s>ORIGINAL: Dimitris<br/>

I think this is deliberate. Providing updates to AMRAAM-class weapons requires "tracking" detections, so the target must remain within the radar detect/track arcs. Guiding Sparrow-class weapons requires illumination hits, so the target only ...

RE: Engage Offensive - ignoring doctrine?

<t> Very glad to hear this will be fixed soon. I've also noticed it happening with A2G weapons, like the GBU-15, AGM-130, AGM-84, and AGM-62; here's a save file showing those just after launch with the planes stuck on "Engaged Offensive" mode. Will this patch also fix those?<br/>

RE: Ways to Spruce Up a Scenario

<t> Another possibility that just occurred to me: make the radars and SAMs regenerate with a LUA script after some amount of time, maybe 12 to 24 hours, to simulate the sites being repaired and brought back into service, or backup units being deployed. Possibly also with a random location some ...

RE: Ways to Spruce Up a Scenario

<t> Just going off the cuff, you could have some random timers that would create (or warp in from across the map) ground units as the scenario goes on, to simulate units that were hidden by camouflage or inside buildings or were otherwise inactive and not possible to find when the initial battle ...

RE: Any scenario with opponent WRA not to max settings

<t> Interesting that this should get resurrected today... I was just thinking, after I posted my recent AAR of the Kuril Sunrise scenario, that one of the other things I liked about it was that the WRA values were changed for several weapons. Kinda reminded me that screen is there. I don't make many ...

RE: Build 998.12 ASW Partols MAY BE defaulting to weapons free

I think this has been the case for a while, and I thought it was intentional... AAW Patrol missions also default to active radar, and there might be others. I did a quick check in the manual and Mega FAQ but didn't see any list of what missions have what default settings.

RE: Kuril Sunrise, 2018: Russian Side

<t> I just posted my Kuril Sunrise Russia AAR... I wish I had thought of using the Yasen to knock out land targets; it didn't occur to me to check the valid target types for the SS-N-26, I just assumed they were antiship only. I also didn't find out until afterwards that the MiG-29s can be rearmed ...

Kuril Sunrise Russia AAR [SPOILERS]

<r> I played the scenario on launch day as Japan and it was fairly easy, I think I lost one or two subs and one or two F-15s in exchange for destroying all the Russian aircraft (including tankers and Mainstays) and sinking all the Russian surface ships and two or three of their subs. That was before ...
