Re: Questions about platoons

I don't think it matters for two reasons.

First, CMO's gunfire model is geared towards naval artillery duels rather than firefights with rifles and machine guns. I have experimented with the "rifleman" ground units (not facilities) and found it can be pretty silly trying to make them fight in an ...

Re: Reference: PLA bases and facilities map

In case anyone is interested, I recently made some Import/Export files based on Jaidev's mapping of Chinese facilities in 2023, for the SAMs and radars of the Eastern Theater Command. https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopic.php?p=5234802#p5234802

It appears the SAM file will need to be updated, as ...

Re: Pakistan shot down an Indian Rafale from ~200 km using a Chinese PL-15 missile

FYI, the graphic does not come from the news source "confirming" the kill. It seems to be from an entirely separate OSINT group. The confirmation comes from Reuters journalists who claim to have interviewed both Pakistani and Indian officials. Some RUSI analysts weigh in, perhaps giving it some ...

Three files: PLA Eastern Theater Command AD, PLA Eastern Theater Command EW-ECM, and PLA Eastern Theater Command airfields (Ground Force, Navy, and Air Force) as single-unit airfields as of 2025. The PLA Eastern Theater Command is the unified combatant command that would have primary responsibility ...

Re: CMO v1.08 Update - Build 1676

I have gotten a reply. The required "setup file" is indeed the installer for the entire game. This is a tad unfortunate as the size of the file is 22 some gb: over twice the size of the actual update itself.

A saving grace is that there shouldn't be any need to uninstall the game, because the ...

Re: Active Sonar Query

Thanks for the replies.

I tend to use active sonars on ships a lot. Yes they do give away position, but for a ship (not a sub) I consider this a positive. It is essentially a message "better stay away lest that you get sunk". Am I wrong?

I think that would depend on the mission of the ship(s ...

Re: How to determine the optimal altitude for agility (without penalties) for dogfight tactics in CMO

It would be interesting to know, is there any particular sort of aircraft you are using that you feel require this information to use more efficiently?

Agility is not going to be much of a factor in very modern (1970s+) air-to-air combat. Destruction is done with missiles and defense is done with ...

Re: CMO v1.08 Update - Build 1676

I got the same issue and contacted Slitherine support. They are saying that the setup file (in addition to the update file) for 1674 is required for this update. In the my page section of the Matrix website, the only file that looks like that is the actual download to install the entire game ...

Re: A2A Tanker Support advice

I've never noticed that, usually if I set a fighter jet to cruise speed it will tell me the desired speed is 480 knots no matter what altitude. In that aforementioned scenario involving the F-2s I did notice F-35s flying at 470 knots while at very, very high altitude (I had them cruise at max: 16 ...

Re: A2A Tanker Support advice

It would be interesting to know if the game's flight model is detailed enough to portray that.

At first glance I would think it currently isn't, as while fuel consumption changes at different altitudes, the various throttle settings have identical speeds at every altitude. Maybe this is sufficient ...

Re: Can we make the stylized UAV Icon Bigger/Better?

To find a missing unit under your control, I think you can just open up the Order of Battle and click on it, and the game will automatically focus to it.

Re: A2A Tanker Support advice

And one more critical parameter...load outs. I think most player way underestimate how critical it is to know the impact of loadout and altitude/speed defaults of each loadout.

This is probably the most important. A lot of (perhaps all) strike loadouts, for example, will have the aircraft ...

Re: UAPs in Command: A serious thought experiment

I think what you said in another thread about adding them as "biologics in the sky" alongside flocks of birds and other objects that can generate unwanted radar clutter would make sense. The addition of commercial and civilian aircraft to the game already fulfill that kind of role, so more could be ...

Re: CWDB thought experiment...Greater Germany

TL/DR: Most nations had armament plans stretching into the late 1940s, and these provide a reasonable idea of what might have been on hand in the early 1950s. Combined with prototype and "paper" aircraft, these designs provide plentiful material for an alternate "late" WWII database. As a matter of ...

Re: Peacekeeping ideas

I think this would be interesting if the peacekeepers were their own side (UN), and the player was in control of national military forces whose leadership had decided to unilaterally intervene for some specific reason. Maybe WMDs or a hostage crisis.

The peacekeepers would have their own set ...

Ship unit proficiency

When building a scenario, I've heard that one measure of how to apply a baseline proficiency to a side is to correlate the five proficiency levels in the game (novice, cadet, regular, veteran, and ace) to average flying hours for pilots. This is for aviation-oriented scenarios of course. Novice ...

Re: AI as a "force multiplier" for scenario design

It sounds useful, especially for trying to come up with a large campaign of scenarios. I personally wouldn't use it as the sole source for ideas, but quickly coming up with my own and then weighing it against anything the AI has to say would enhance the creative process.

For folks with limited time ...

Re: Question about Soviet tactics

Political factors are probably a much bigger influence than the Soviets' material capacity to do stuff.

Historically during this period, the Soviets were much more concerned about a war with China than with NATO. Brezhnev regarded Mao as a total madman. So the events that lead up to this land grab ...

Re: GBU-57 research analysis for the game

I don't think it is worth trying to figure out how to model things in CMO that occurred in real life to that level. Some things are just so circumstantial they can't be reproduced in game.

One of the bonus scenarios in Chains of War is a good example of this. It features a historical battle between ...
