Suggestions I have about quality of life improvements:
1)having the possibility of changing the color and flag of your empire after the start of the game. I chose for the first time the violet and it is very difficult to distinguish it from the black background.

Check under the prisioners tab if you can hire them, release them or the like.

However, currently that only works with very few leaders.

Just checked also the prisoner tab and they are not there. Is this a design choice or a bug? Seems strange having the characters on board of my ships and ...

I think that the soft/hard type of armor is determined by the type of unit, the the specific armor it comes equipped with. So for infantry it should be soft, even with battledresses. But the manual does not say this explicitly so I could be wrong.

I should mention that the rail line going to NE goes in circle and comes back to the south of the capitol. Also I played most of this game on version 1.06.05.
