Any info on when roughly to expect multiplayer?

I saw that real time multiplayer is in development. Are there any rough timelines on when we can expect it to come out?

Are there any plans for a coop or multiplayer game mode? I would really like to play with friends as I find that to be more interesting and the game is a bit intimidating to play by myself.
