You might try reducing the hardware sound acceleration level, using dxdiag. [&:]

I don't ever recall adjusting it from the default of '0'. If I wanted to adjust the degree of difficulty for a game, I've played with the Player Preferences.

If you find that the artillery bombardments consume too much time for your liking, go to the 'Preferences' settings and set 'Fast Artillery On'.
