RE: West Berlin 2.0

Cool. Lived in Berlin twice during the Cold War (worked at Marienfelde 690th ESW Det 1 the last time). Be overestimating to see what goes on with this map, and hopefully a scenario.

RE: Aviation Units and Hex Occupation

<t> I think the main question here though is why? Why do support units like air formations occupy a hex at the expense of a ground unit being able to do so as well? It seems a no-brainer that they should stack with a ground unit, as it's a very hard sell to convince anyone that the air formations ...

RE: NK's fifth nuke test

<t> Heh, I trust China about as far as I can throw it. I don't think that's a function of communism, though; there's a long long history of China being a shrewd, opportunistic, and ruthless player in Asia, and the fact that the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw them sidelined pretty much ...

RE: NK's fifth nuke test

<t> Sure, "things." What "things?" No one, I think, will gainsay that the North's nuclear capability is something to take seriously. And everyone in our neck of the woods pretty much wants to do something. But again, what? In a purely utilitarian analysis, there is far more bad attached to any ...

RE: NK's fifth nuke test

<t> Well, North Korea's nuclear program is indeed a matter of grave concern for the USA and, perhaps more so, the people in the region. Yet, there are a limited number of viable options in dealing with Pyongyang. They've always been able to stymie any physical responses, that is, military responses ...

IIRC: On Steam the current Order of Battle Pacific product will be renamed and rebranded into OoB WW2, and thus become the free version. Anyone who owned OOBP before this date will automatically receive the US Pacific and Rising Sun DLCs for ...

RE: Order of Battle goes global!

How is the transition going to be handled? If we have the game via Steam, for instance, will it automagically convert the package to the new version? Will it eat the old version and replace it? Curious as to how this is going to play out.

Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing to watch. That being said, you'll notice that the three best tank platoons were all in Leopards (the Poles brought Leos to this one), and the three European armies haven't been using their tankers as Saw ...

<t> I had issues here, too, until I realized, um, I could buy other troops. Yeah, the game doesn't tell you much, but you start with a lot of prestige or whatever they call those points that let you buy troops. I bought a bunch more Marine units and one tank, mainly for its mobility, and a dive ...

<t> The best deterrent to any Russian adventurism in the Baltics is diplomatic and economic. Unless seriously provoked, I can't really think that Moscow would undertake such a dangerous and potentially devastating--in diplomatic and economic terms--course of action. It is also necessary to have ...

Yeah, it's an interesting read. It seems there is a mix of what we might call westernization with more traditional Russian military traditions.

No surprises there, really. Of course, no one really knows until you get into a real donnybrook of like vs. like. Which, I hope, never happens, so I'm happy to live with ambiguity.

<t> I played a few turns of the 1805 scenario after watching the tutorial videos (nice videos, by the way). The battles are really engaging; the simplicity leads to an elegant approach to combat resolution, not a simplistic one. Strategically, it certainly feels challenging initially. I had a ...

RE: Russians in Syria

The comments on that piece about the T-90 indicate that it in fact was not destroyed or even fallen out, that after the panicking crewman got back in it drove off. I have no idea how reliable that is, but it makes a certain degree of sense, if the reactive armor did its job.

<t> Panzer Battles Normandy is the second in the series, after the one of the southern flank at Kursk. I like the game system quite a bit; it's low-level enough to showcase differences in tactics and equipment, but high-level enough to simulate formations and organizations with some fidelity. You ...

<t> Those were also the days when you'd go into a shop and actually be surprised to find something new on the shelf, as without the 24/7 bombardment of product info we have today--much less digital distribution!--the pace of things was a lot slower. Box art was crucial in getting your attention, and ...
