I noticed that many 3D alternate Bases mods are already included with the game and that you only have to enable them with the also included JSGME app.

After unzipping all of them It seems to me that all of these so called mods are just changes to the artwork.

No. I like to buy Slitherine/Matrix games from here because the games can be run without Steam. I own the game and if Steam ever goes out of business the game is still mine. With Steam, although it is a one-time payment, you are effectively 'renting' the game.
