You could not repaint/mod stock ships anyway iirc
they are in a encrpyted dat file to protect IP

I would dearly love to see a Hard sci-fi mod but there are a number of problems with SS as it stands

mainly Sensors/detection, Armor, fuel, and the AI cant handle "relistic" ranges
