Which Country To Play

I have been playing the game for a few months now and in each of my games I have played as France because I saw advantages there that, in my view, did not exist in other countries and my view was that these advantages allowed me to learn and understand the underlying dynamics of the game. My focus ...

Coastal Bombardment

Playing the French around 1906. I have had two tactical situations now where my ships are supposed to protect convoys and coastal installations. I receive the sound of gunfire and a report of shelling at a coastal location.

How do I determine roughly where the firing is coming from?

I can't seem ...

Re: Scrapping Old Ships

I may have gotten dinged because I scrapped too many at once. As I said, in my game I was the last player to get rid of the pre dreadnoughts and at the time, playing the French, I had plenty of tonnage as well as relatively high prestige (54). I moved to scrap the four oldest B’s and, as I recall ...

Scrapping Old Ships

Does a decision to scrap old ships always lead to loss of prestige? I recently had that happen - when I was pretty much the last player to scrap pre dreadnoughts - and I wondered whether this is a regular penalty or simply a peculiarity of my particular game.

A Few Questions

Still relatively new. Here are a few questions which can be answered by reference to the question number ---

1) Fleet Exercise. I have seen how this improves the crew quality. Is there any real need to personally play the encounter out? I have turned it over to the computer and sat back. I ...

Re: Is Gunnery Training Worth It

Thanks for the tips. I am still relatively new and when I first posted above I was ten years into the game and got "sticker shock" when I saw how much gunnery training would cost for my then somewhat extensive navy. Interesting that I started a new game and began gunnery training immediately and the ...

Re: Is Gunnery Training Worth It

I guess I should ask a related question just to be sure. My understanding, I could be wrong, is that you pay the training amount on a monthly basis but it does not have an impact until twelve months have passed. Even after the twelve months have passed, if you ever stop paying you lose all the ...

Is Gunnery Training Worth It

Only been playing a few weeks. Just curious as to the reactions of experienced players.

As a general matter, is gunnery training worth it? In general, it looks like it costs a fair amount, taking away shipbuilding opportunities, and I know it takes twelve months and then if you ever stop paying you ...

Re: FS - foreign station question

Thanks for the info. I was wondering whether I had screwed something up and whether it was a bug. Good to know that this is how it is supposed to work.

The problem for me though was that playing as the French the ai kept sending the “colony” corvettes to areas where I had no base - both South ...

FS - foreign station question

I am brand new to the game. Have played three “new games”, each for about ten years when I realized that I had learned a lot of new things and decided to start over again. Have played France in 1890 in each case and am enjoying it a lot.

Recently I had some odd experiences. I had a number of ...

Stacking Points

I think that I used to know the answer to this but I have forgotten and in reading the section on the manual I am still unclear.

Do the concerns re stacking points and over stacking only exist if, when I attack, I exceed the attack amount allowed?

Example - I am attacking from a single hex and am ...

Re: Fixing "Relocation" - "Fall Back Orders"

Having started this thread, let me say just a last couple of things and then I’ll drop out.

My description of what I believe is missing in the game did not use the terminology that is currently dominant. I was trying to describe a fairly basic concept in my own words and was largely unsuccessful in ...

Re: An Odd Question Re Solitaire Play

Funny, one of the reasons for my “treatise” was that I wanted to try to avoid any lecture about how I would be a better and more enlightened person if I gave up solitaire play in favor of playing against humans. I have endured those well intended instructions a few times in the past but at this ...

Wow. Thanks. Sorry I felt I had to write such a long treatise in order to elicit such a simple answer. Sometimes you miss things that are staring you in the face.

An Odd Question Re Solitaire Play

This is a convoluted question but please bear with me so that you know what I am asking and why.

I am a very old wargamer going back to the earliest days of board gaming. When I was growing up, there were very few opponents available, and my regular pattern of game playing was simply to "turn the ...

Re: Fixing "Relocation" - "Fall Back Orders"

Thank you CapnDarwin. You have clarified the issue with an excellent distinction.

My point and concern is that the current system does not allow for a considered engagement and orderly withdrawal. You cannot establish a screening line ahead of the main line of resistance and then order them to ...

Re: Fixing "Relocation" - "Fall Back Orders"

Interesting response IronMike.

Under the current system, as the Battalion/Regiment/Brigade commander, using the SOP and other commands I can direct each and every platoon as to when it can open fire, the exact range at which can open fire, when it should pull back from contact, how it should move ...

Fixing "Relocation" - "Fall Back Orders"

I have been playing Southern Storm for 30 days now. You guys are to be congratulated. You took an excellent system (that I had played a great deal) and you substantially improved it. That is a rare accomplishment in wargaming, trust me, I know from decades of experience. Great work.

The one ...
