Taking out a B-17

Post by PeckingFury »

This has probably been brought up before but was curious, how does one take out a B-17? Opponent had 6 comming in met with a cap of 30 zero and didnt take one b-17 out at all.

Problem is, B-17s are designed to fly higher than Zeros operate effectively. What you need to do is convince high command back in Tokyo to develop a higher-altitude interceptor.

Thanks for the reply, makes sense but the combat graphics confused me, looked as if they were being engaged.

Best ways to deal with B17s are

1. make them fly a long way to bomb you, and have them outnumbered at 4 or 5 to 1 with experienced, rested pilots. Carnage DOES happen - especially since you damage most of them and then the b17s don't actually amke it back to base (check the op losses).

2. 14, 16, or 18 inch shells from your IJN battleships against b17 airfields during the night. I've wiped them out of the game with three well placed, surprise bombardments of Cairns against one opponent.

Hello...

If available, you might try using heavy fighters with a lot of guns, such as the Nick, Frank or Irving. These are tough enough to close with the Fortress and have enough firepower to shoot them down. These planes may not be the best at tackling enemy fighters, but they are the best to use against bombers of any type.

Hope this Helps...

Yep, killing them on the ground is always the best solution.

Would be nice if larger aircraft had a higher rate of loss during air raids to deal with the reality of being less likely to be hidden and making such nice targets.

I get annoyed when bombing a base and see a bunch of fighters getting destroyed on the ground yet none of the bombers there take a hit...
