Landing Craft

Post by TK421__ »

What are the rules for creating Landing Craft at a base?

According to the manual its

Build them from any base with a current port size of
at least 1 and more than 10000 supplies.

This works OK for South Pacific/Oz (Rabaul/Port Moreseby/Darwin for example) but I can't build them further west (Hollandia, Koepang, Singapore)

I just retook Singers and want to use them to shuttle my troops across to Sumatra

Is this WAD or have I missed something?

Yeah, I kept Soera in a vs AI game, and it seems that you can only make LCs at bases in Australia and in other such areas that the Allies are expected to keep throughout the war. So when I wanted to move LCs up to Java, I would need to make them in Darwin and then put them in a convoy and send them up.

As to why... I guess it's just one of those things. It's kind of like the aircraft pools, it doesn't actually make sense the way it is represented in the game, but to do otherwise would introduce insane complications to logistics. So its an abstraction of RL processes.

Its related to the nationality of the base IIRC....

Yes. Nationality of base if creating from base screen and nationality of base where TF loaded if creating from TF screen.

Most of the landing craft are USN ships. So, the base needs to be North Pac, South Pac, Pac, SW Pac, etc.

I'm not sure if there are any non-USN landing craft.

6.2.16 CREATING PT BOATS, MOTOR GUNBOATS, MIDGET SUBS AND BARGES

page 108
To create a PT boat or barge:

»» Form a Transport TF and load supplies onto it. Once this is done, at any time the TF may convert some of the loaded supplies to create a TF of barges or to create a TF of PT boats by clicking on the appropriate Create Barge, Create PT Boats, Create MGB or Create SSX arrow button. This is done from the TF Information Screen of the TF carrying the supplies.

»» Build them from any base with a current port size of at least 1 and more than 10000 supplies.

Taking into account the above, plus what has been stated earlier in this thread I wanted to make certain I understood the game mechanics. Hence, let's look at the following scenarios.

Scenaro1
Many ships are currently at anchor at PH. A new TF is created that is composed of ships that are all attached to Australia Command. This TF was created while in PH (PH Base is attached to Pacific Fleet), and load supplies from PH. If this TF later (without having drawn supplies from anywhere else) decides to create small craft, it will be determined by the Nationality of Pacific Fleet, correct?

Scenario2
Let's say that later on the same TF from above moves to a different base & unloads part of it's supplies (but not all), then makes it way to Noumea (attached to Free French Command) & loads supplies from Noumea...if that TF then attempts to create any PT/Barges it will be determined upon the Nationality of the Free French Command?

Scenario3
What about if ships from two different TF (both of which loaded supplies -- 1 from PH & 1 from Noumea) merge, what Nationality would it be determined by?

Side Note:
Under the ship availability it lists three types:
PT Boats Available
MGBs Available
Landing Craft Available

Other than disbanding one of the current existing groups (or them being sunk), what other methods (if any) can I employ to increase how many more I can create?

Or is the total number only subject to change based upon certain scenario time frames (if so, when?)

It is always the nationality of the port. For a TF, the nationality of the port where the ships loaded. Nationality of ship does not matter.

When more craft become available is defined in the scenario files. The only way to get more is to create a custom scenario with more of them. The rate of availability does vary with time. The Americans get more later in the war.

Only the Americans?
Where in the scenario files would I find out when they get more?

Load your game. Open the information screen. Look at ship reinforcements. Select only the LC ships (landing craft). That will tell you when you're getting more.

fyi, when you get some as reinforcements, they show up in some port (I think SF). Go to the port screen and select the craft. There should be an option to "return to pool". If you choose that, it dissapears and 30 days later, it shows up in the pool. Then you can 'create' it at any base that has a USN headquarter designation.

I know the Brits get some LST's and LCI's. I'm not sure if they get any landing craft.

Thanks for responses

Can confirm its definitely related to HQ of base as for some reason Johore Baru was assigned to SouthWest Pacific when I retook it so I just built the transports there :)

Based upon that, it then looks as if the British get more starting in April of '45 (and a few more after), the Soviets in Sept of '43 (and more afterwards), but the USN continually get them from Jan '43 on up.
