Cool movie. Donna Reed was a Babe!

I have a question pertaining to the movie subject matter...

Did any PT boat ever actually torpedo a cruiser (or for that matter, a Destroyer?)
In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

According to S.E. Morison, the PTs in the Philippines campaign claimed two cruisers and two large Marus sunk, but subsequent investigation found that none of them were even damaged. During the Guadalcanal campaign, DD Hatsukaze was torpedoed and damaged by either PT-43 or PT-112, DD Teruzuki was sunk by LT(jg) Gamble in PT-??, submarine I-3 was torpedoed and sunk by PT-59. PT-122 sank an I-class submarine with torpdoes and depth charges near Buna on Christmas Eve 1942. In the battle of the Bismarck Sea, PT-143 and PT-150 finished off abandoned transport Oigawa Maru. During the Battle of Surigao Strait, PT-137 launched torpedos against a DD, missed, and hit CL Abukuma instead, which was finally sunk a day later by Army bombers. There might have been other successfull torpedoings which elude me at the moment. There surely were plenty of successfull (gunfire) barge-busting missions.

I remember that John Wayne movie very good (was again on TV here last year)...

In movie the highlight was the destruction of Japanese cruiser and I wanly searched my books and Internet for confirmation of that... now it appears that, after all, it was just goof fun movie made to boost morale...

If I remember correctly, the PT 73 sank a number of Japanese submarines.
