nav bomber altitudes

Post by AirGriff »

Wha'ts the consensus on using higher or standard altitudes for CV bomb groups? My opponent seems to favor the higher settings so his guys come down in bigger groups. I keep mine at the standard preset altitudes. I do get frustrated watching 4 plane groups focus on the wrong ships, but then I wonder if I get more hits with a greater number of groups.

I prefer more small groups. I'd rather see 4 planes go after a DD (instead of a CV) rather than 9 planes going after a DD.

If going against another CV TF, I do prefer the larger groups and thus set my DB/TB above 15,000. Everything else is set between 10,000 and 7,000. Just my opinion. [;)]

Hello...

I put my fighters at 20,000 feet, my dive bombers at 18,000 feet and my torpedo bombers at 4,000 feet.

Bye...

Interesting. I usually put mine at 5000' for DB and 2000' for TB. Didn't know sucha difference in height could make such a difference.

Well, both your dive bombers and torpedo bombers will be taking AA at both altitudes (the chosen altitude and release altitude), so choosing a somewhat higher initial altitude might have its advantages.

I put my fighters at 20,000 feet, my dive bombers at 18,000 feet and my toprpedo bombers at 4,000 feet.

What are the reasons for those settings? Why not put the DB's at 13,000 (that's the break isn't it?)? Is there a greater advantage to the 18k setting?

Do you set the fighters at 20k for escort purposes? I thought escorting fighters always went a couple thousand above their bombers.

Why the lower than preset altitude for the TB's? Just curious.

Does it matter at all what altitude you set your fighters if they are escorting besides dictating what altitude cap will fly at?

As far as the game is concerned, I havent noticed any diff. I assume that as long as an attacking fighter (CAP or escort) starts out at a higher altitude than it's target, than it gets a bonus in combat.

But that is just a hunch, I do not have any data to back that up.

The break between 4 a/c groups and 9 a/c groups is at 15,000 feet (or is it 15,001?[;)]).

The altitude you set determines what altitude your CAP portion will fly at. The escort portion will come in 3000' above the bombers they are escorting (supposedly).

DB's at 15000 and TB's at 10000. The TBs are gonna get eaten up by AA anyway because they attack at 200'. Putting them higher at least cuts down a bit of the AA on approach.

However, the fact that the programmer puts them at 4k gives me pause..... [X(]

Personally, I find it highly annoying when they make statements like that without say WHY!

It was probably some fancy equation that shows everyone exactly how to use calculus to determine the optimal altitude settings to minimize loss to flak and maximize accuracy. Some two variable integral or something. [:D]
