PT Boat Sweeps

Post by Nemo121 »

I know this has been covered elsewhere and I've used search but can't for the life of me find the info...

What fighter mission takes out PT boats? I find myself in the position of needing to sweep Burma/DEI and the Hawaiian Islands clear of PT boats rather rapidly in a current PBEM and naval attack at 100 feet (which I thought was the order) hasn't, over the course of 2 days, resulted in a single attack on PT boats by my Zeroes so am I to use a different order?

yes, IIRC it is 100 ft naval attack. Did your recon planes spoted enemy PT boats?

Indeed, it's 100 ft strafing attacks. But doesn't that cause the infamous sync bugs in PBEM, for example ?

Yes, it can cause the bug

Strafing PT Boats will take some number of days to take them out completely. You can also send in DDs if you have air cover.

Small DD TF does bad things to PT TFs, as far as I have tried. Well, destroyer was torpedo boat destroyer anyway...[:D]

Yup 100ft attacks work well , but i am leery of using DD's as one torp and its a valuable unit. also for some reason PT's fire 50 calibre ship sinking rounds into DD's too.. grrr

How about using PG's ? or spare MSW's as they come back at least.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Yea, PGs and MSWs work well too. Just about anything with more than machine guns works.

Agreed. That's why i sent DDs only against small numbers of PT. I cant affort to risk losing DDs in such a cheap way...

Yeah, .50 calibre and DDs are funny thing - especially after you have seen that enemy transport wasnt sunk after two torps; or 6 250kg bombs.... i will never understand that...

Maybe .50 cal always magically hits torpedoes and depth charges on DD...[:'(]

I think its a matter of urgency. If you just need to supress PT boat activity in an area then AC attacks are good for this. But if you absolutely need to clear an area you have to use surface ships. I find DDs best all around for this activity. You can loose one but usually they will take out the PTs no problem.

Use the Otori and Tomozuri classes for that. They've no depth charges or Long Lances, but more than enough gunpower to take care of PT boats...

I prefer a CL with 3 DD's for my PT boat TF's...DD's without the CL are more vunerable.

Ok, I'll try it again... Basically I can't really commit my DDs and CLs to the mission since most of them are either covering the Malaysian invasion TFs ( and follow-up waves), the landing at Palembang or the landings at Hawaii... Well, to be fair, most of the forces covering the Hawaiian invasions are badly beaten up. I've lost about a half-dozen ships there and another dozen warships in almost sinking condition ( combined damage well over 60) in vicious night fighting against enemy cruisers, destroyers and even DMs and DMSes... Its a real kitchen sink affair so I don't have too many CLs to spare ( not helped by the fact that 2 of my 5 CL-led DD TFs were trashed in night-time surface engagements vs Force Z and other Allied surface strike groups.

I've taken to calling this one my "Chum Game" after the stuff they put in the water to attract sharks... The reason being that in under 1 week's action naval surface actions have accounted for dozens of ships and tens of thousands of men across the length and breadth of the Atlantic. So, for all of those reasons I need to stop the PTs with fighters OR put off my designs on Rangoon and Andaman for another fortnight ( which I don't want to do).

Thanks for the input.
