Further - Mike Wood explained that you can mitigate pilot losses by putting up plane guards - subs or ships to pick up downed pilots - and few players for Japan really are doing that - so those pilots are always lost.

This quote is from El Sid in the Scenario Design section: Plane guards

Does anyone know more about these "plane guards?"[&:][&:]

I have never heard of it.  ANYTHING to keep my pilots alive would be welcome...

IF that is true it should have been put in the manual.  Where exactly is the player supposed to put these S&R ships?  In the target hex?  What about inland bases?  Along the flight path?  Flights that don't cross the water?

I heard this many moons ago from Mr Frag.

Supposedly, ships/subs along the flight path of aircraft missions, increases the chance of pilots being recovered.

True?
Who knows?

Given his track record, that sounds to me like evidence that it isn't in the program.

I was.  But everytime it looks like some progress is being made, something like this pops up.  We find out about yet another deliberately hidden function or "feature" that was kept that way for no reason other than the developers wanted to have a secret.  (Or another bad design decision causing problems or preventing something from being fixed.  Or someone who is in the know starting a rumor that they know is false apparently just to send the customers harrying off on a wild goose chase. Or....)  [:@]  I'm sorry, but I can't be happy and smiley when my intelligence is being constantly insulted with slaps in the face.  That fact that we are two years after release and the developers are still deliberately preventing accurate information from being given to their paying customers with NDAs says a great deal about the character of the company.  None of it good.

It is not a rumor..I 1st noticed this several months(maybe 2 patches back) and commented after having observed it..I commented on it to see if others had noticed it, and indeed that thread was verified by Mr Wood himself!..In detail he explained that pilots have a better chance of rescue if the area has friendly units. This means if you have friendly subs, PT boats, anything that exerts friendly ZOC will increase the odds of safe recovery.....I would suggest a search of the forum, but we all know how THAT won't work!

Mike Wood posted it several months ago (this year IIRC). Best I remember it was always in, not added in a patch - Mike just talked about as part of a thread discussion centered around a patch. He's real good about answering questions when you have his attention and he has time.

The Search function is rather fickle so it took quite a while to find this.

The thread is called The "Official" scoop on LB30's, B24's, etc.

Here is the link to Mike Woods' post:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=1046510&key=

And here it is cut and pasted. Post is RE: The "Official" scoop on LB30's, B24's, etc. - 1/29/2006 12:44:38 AM
Hello...

Yes. When plane goes down, the search and rescue routine looks at range to and presence of friendly and enemy bases, range to and number of friendly and enemy ships, terrain (water, forest, etc.), pilot skill and pilot wounds. Allied pilots gain bonus. Then determines if captured, rescued, missing in action or killed. If not rescued, some fog of war may be added. If rescued, wounds determine how long out of action. If not wounded, returns to action next day.

So, for instance, if flying long distance over water, you might try posting a few submarines along flight path to help recover pilots from aircraft which take damage and crash on way home.

Bye...

Michael Wood

Now that you've mentioned this guys...

I'm a pilot fanboy and often keeping a track of them. Noticed that pilots which are shot down (wounded/bails out) in "friendly" hex are more more often saved. This works even in enemy hex but you do have friendly units there.

Several allied aces are shot down in such areas but they were rescued (grrrr..:!)... last time he attacked base deep in my teritory (with no allied units nearby) and his ace was captured. Of course, this may be coincidence but i'm confident that i saw both examples...

This is pretty cool, too bad it wasn't in the Manual, may have to adjust some of my sub deployments now.

Gee - I'd hate to think what they are doing to him! [:D]

As far as the "plane guard" goes - yes it works, you always stand a better chance of recovering downed pilots over friendly territory

But when I read "plane guard" - I was thinking of just that - a carrier's plane guard destroyer...no way to do that in the game.

I think it was the hippies that got him. He's probably being forced to grow his hair long, wear beads and sandals and listen to weird music, but don't worry in ten years he will opt to cut his hair, move to Seattle and go to work for Microsoft. [:'(]

What is the reason for the allied bonus? Note that includes even the Chinese.
