OT--State Fair

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

Thursday brings the State Fair, the official end of summer here in the Great White North. This is a photo from last year's event. A friend of mine. He's a bit stiff; doesn't like his picture taken.

BTW, the guy in the back in orange might be Bret Favre. Pass it on.

Yeah. And can I have some too? No-not the moose cud, whatever you're sipping.

Oh yeah-who is Brett Favre? Sounds French.

So, erm, should we disregard?

I like the moose. When my brother was at the University of Texas I went to the Texas State Fair once. I saw a giant pig - quite the attraction for a city boy. Mmmmm bacon.

The Texas State Fair is the only one with a higher attendance. Last year ours was over 1.5 million. We have the Minnesota's Largest Boar exhibit in the Swine Barn each year. Usually running near a thousand pounds.

We also carve our Dairy Princesses in giant blocks of butter, beginning with Princess Kay of the Milky Way, the winner of the pageant that year. It's quite an honor. They sit in a huge, rotating, glass-walled cooler where the sculptor works on the block as the crowd watches. The other heads from earlier days are mounted at the window, so you can take snapshots, dontchaknow. The paper ran a story yesterday about a Mom (OK, she's a medical doctor too) who has had three daughters carved. She has a dedicated freezer at home where she has saved the heads for many years. She brought them out for the photog and sat them on a bench, side-by-side. If you looked closely, you could see how the hair styles changed . . .

Most of the princesses donate them to a fire department pancake feed for charity--a bit cannibalistic if you ask me. Others serve them at their wedding reception. It's a Minnesota thing.

Heh heh. It's in the DNR exhibit. He's a little . . . stiff. Probably too much buttermilk and marsh grass.

Edit: Oops. Thought you were talking to me. My name's Steve too.

You do have boar superiority over Texas. We can counter that with armadillo superiority.

When you hear or read 'boar' does anyone here else instinctively think 'british army of the rhine'?

The MN State Fair. Good times, used to live on N. Pascal Str. parked cars on the lawn for $5.00 and sell kool-aid to people on their way into the fair. Good money as a kid :-). When the fair wasn't in session it was a great place to sneak into and just wander around. Good times.

I think an armadillo would freeze where he sat. Still, they're cool little dudes, in a prehistoric sort of way.

We do have loons. And the mighty walleye. Don't forget the mighty walleye. (Not to be confused with the crappie.)

She was in the Strib over the weekend, at some sort of charity to-do. A nice lady.

Too bad our county fair is 3x

There's a reason I left the Great White North.

Surfing, Sking, and a Grand 'ol fair.
