ASW: APD vs. DE

Post by mc3744 »

What I've quickly learnt is that in AE subs are a completely different beast to deal with! [X(]

Now - from the Allies perspective - would you rather convert some DDs to APDs, with ASW 6 and fast transport capabilities, or to DEs with ASW 8?

Do you actually notice the 6 vs. 8? If yes do you find the trade-off vs. the transport capacity and the wait (APD can be converted from the beginning, while for DEs you have to wait till 42/04 when you already have some good ASW DDs) worth it?

I need to deal with those damn subs! [8|]

Personnal I found the US ASW was poor in 42 so 6 against 8 makes no real difference. By the time they get to anything worth bothering about you've got lots anyway. I did find I needed APDs though. This is against the AI.

ASW number is just rough calculation of ASW weaponry on ship (just like AAA value). If you want to make really educated decision, you need to check both ship classes in editor AND also compare their weapons. ASW 6 with good weapons can easily trump ASW 8 with less than spectacular capability.

Max - there was a detailed thread about this months ago and it is best to go the APD route as you will eventually get a lot of SC for the Allies. Some with enough endurance to be able to escort transports. If you feel lucky, you can try the search function to find it. [:D]

There has been a lot of discussion about this. Here is my personal bent. The first 10 months of the war the Allies are very short of ASW assets and really do take a whupping from Japanese subs. The temptation is to convert Those old DDs to DE as much as you can. However, by the end of the year you will start getting a flood of ASW worthy ships and your other ships will start to upgrade in weapon types and quality. By mid 1943 you will have no shortage of ASW assets and by the end of 43 you will be looking for a way to use them all as you will have more than you need. And there will be a lot less Japanese subs around as you will have sunk a lot of them.

My campaign is just turning from 1943 to 1944, and we started playing it when AE was brand new a year and a half ago. There is not a turn that goes by where I don't want to kick myself in the butt for not converting every DD I possibly could into APDs. There you have it. There are simply not enough of these priceless ships-ever. And the 8 to 10 DDs that I wasted by converting to DEs instead of APDs have really not had any impact on the game.

There are some players who will argue the opposite. But you will never hear that from me...[:-]

Why is the search function not working at all??
I tried in on the iPad, with Safari under MacOS, with Explorer 9 in Win7. I just cannot get it to work. I keep getting zero results with the usual 2 possible reasons [:@]
I wouldn't have to post so many questions if I could search the forum. [&:]

Sounds good to me. I do like APDs anyway [:)]

APD's every single time imo , far more versatile and great for grabbing small empty bases later on.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

While the De does have a better ASW rating , the 6 on the APD isn't bad, and the APD is very, very versitile. Self escorting troop ships, the ability to ferry small amounts of troops and supplies into contested waters (and have a fair chance to get away!) are both very appealing.

I do a ratio of for every 3 DD's I convert to APD's I do one AVD. Also has a fair ASW ability , and it allows forward basing of float planes and flying boats in exposed waters. A fast AVD and PBY squadron can get away when the enemy comes to take your small island away from you, but allows you to set up shop immediately after the danger is past. AV's are too slow (they get caught) and are sub bait if not properly escorted.

AVD look intersting, but there are enough AVD and AVP in the game. The Bird class AM can convert to them and are expandable, the Dutch also have a fair number. They don't quite have the same chance to get out if the Japanese come calling, but that is about the only drawback.

I gain a certain satisfaction in driving my Japanese opponents nuts when they try to shut down my seaplane bases and they can't catch the tenders or PBY's. The only thing they can do is occupy the base. (It forces them to place large numbers of troops on garrison duties just to keep me from snooping them). That's why I love 27KT AVD's! [:D]
