[FIXED B556] [B500] Refueling

Post by hamlet »

Hi,

I observed an interesting behavior. When returning from the Mission, units from the Bulls decides to refuel as can be seen in the Status of unit.

Strange: They have lots of fuel, are far far from Bingo.

Now there is a tanker Mission and some Units suceed but one or two unit starts to chase the Tanker Mission.

And I had one case where a unit chased the tanker and then started the attack Mission again.

This is reproducible, just load attached game save and observe the action.

[:)] Hope you can drill down this.

As if have seen this problem to and brought it up in general discussion, I will. Bump this as it has not been answers. It is better suited for this forum rather than general anyway. Basically, how do I force a plane to use the airborne refueler. I have Groups of planes turning around and going home when I hit "refuel (if possible)" instead of using the tanker.

Hey guys,

Refueling in command IMHO requires planning and micromanaging. Here is what I do.

1st things first, set refueling side doctrine to NO, as soon as you start scen. Make sure tankers have proper refueling equipment (centerline boom, probe, etc.) for the AC you plan to refuel.

If flying a strike mission and you have to extend your range set up a tanker support patrol and place it about 1/2 way between your destination and the strikers home base (if that is possible). Figure 4 aircraft per tanker plus another tanker (or 2) for back-up. IRL there is more tankers in the air than needed.

Set strike mission refueling Doctrine to YES. If using groups set group refuel doctrine to YES.

When heading to target, and getting close to tanker patrol, refuel your groups (by using "refuel if possible") Ive found when doing this make sure there is no course plotted when giving refuel order. I've found that sometimes when a course is plotted the refuel command wont work.

If using groups and RTB winchester is YES the aircraft will break from group and RTB. You will notice now that each individual aircraft has its refuel doctrine set at NO. If you feel that your going to need more fuel to get to base then select each individual AC and set to refuel YES. They will refuel if they need to. If they dont need refueling or have refueled and are heading back to base set their doctrine back to NO, and drop them from the mission also (this prevents the flying back to mission behavior).

If using carrier based tankers figure 1 tanker per strike aircraft, when it has refueled your AC, send it back to carrier and launch another to refuel the AC on its way back to carrier.

If using an AAW, SEAD, patrols and you want to use refueling. . .good luck[:)] I only use inflight refueling for dedicated strike missions.

Ive had good luck using this 90% of the time. Sometimes it doesnt cooperate at all, but Ive bugged the devs. about this and I know it is being looked at. My thinking is they are going to improve this once the enhanced mission editor is completed. Its quite a complicated (inflight refueling) thing in Command as in RL also.

Happy Hunting!

WAD. Pilots don't want to have to wait to get to a fuel-critical situation. If someone else needs the fuel more urgently it's his problem, not theirs.

There is no Borg hive-mind super-coordinating and super-optimizing the conduct of military ops, guys (in fact this is the biggest realism issue of most such games). Just a lot of single, self-focused crews each trying to do _their_ job, and the rest can hang.
