[FIXED B775.8] Rockeye Damage

Post by cf_dallas »

I got Northern Inferno for Christmas, and it's awesome. I've got AAR's drafted for the first two scenarios and I'll try to post them this weekend; I'm playing the third (Fast and Furious).

I was surprised at how ineffective my Rockeye-armed F-5As appeared to be against the Osas, so I built a test scenario (attached). I was anticipating that there wouldn't be much hull damage, but a lot of topside havoc... sensors, weapons, etc.

What happened was basically nothing. I tried passes with the F-5 at various altitudes and it didn't change much. Occasionally I'd get <1% damage, maybe a single bomblet (?), with no sensor/weapon damage. Usually there was no damage at all. Also no indication (to either side) of how close the Rockeye or the bomblets came to the target.

Is this working as designed?

I did another test with a Sverdlov, I got slightly more hits (1-2 vs 0-1) but still no damage to "soft" equipment topside.

Thanks! There was a clause in the "determine how many components are hit" method which basically stated that if the damage DP value was too miniscule there was no chance of a component hit. Tweaked it so now there is a pretty small chance of that. (Let's just hope it doesn't lead to tales of "I stripped off a BB of its sensors with my trusty AK-47" [:)]).

The weapon-target combination in this setup is also fundamentally mismatched. The F-5 has poor targeting and only a couple of CBs so there is a very good chance of missing the Osa outright (yes, you can miss even with CBs [:)]). To contrast this, I inserted an A-6E loaded with 12 Rockeyes and let it loose on the same target. The combination of many more shots and excellent targeting resulted in much more frequent hits.

Awesome, thanks for looking at it. I tested "bigger target," but didn't tink to try "infinitely better strike platform."

If it brings back helicopter door gunners sinking 10k ton submarines,I think we'd all be on board. :-)
