Acessibility problem with FOG 2

Post by vaalen »

I cannot yet post on the FOG 2 forum at the slitherine site, yet this issue is so troublesome I will post it here, as I have no current alternative.

I happily bought FOG 2 on steam, and was astonished to find that I could not read the tutorial and scenario instructions which appear on a scroll at the beginning of a tutorial.

The instructions appear as light gray lettering on a light, bright beige background, and I cannot read them. I can read everything else in the game, but not these instructions, or the tutorial windows in the tutorial

I should mention that I am able to read everything on the previous FOG games, of which I have bought many, and on Pike and Shot.

This is something that could be fixed just by using darker letters. I have written on this subject several times before, and I am not alone. While Slitherine has expressed sympathy in the past, This issue makes the tutorial unusable for me, and I suspect a number of others.

I respectfully request that this problem be fixed. The game looks great, and I very much want to play i

Hi VPaulus.

I cannot login on the Slitherine forum, even though I have a Matrix forum code and it is supposed to work at Slitherine. I spent many attempts to try to log in, with no success. I did send a support ticket to Matrix asking for help.

I will go to the Slitherine forum and see if I can connect to the tech support you mentioned. It is worth a try.

Thanks for the feedback. A couple of people have mentioned it so it seems to be some odd setting or hardware/software driver related problem for some people. We're going to have a look and see if there is something we can do.

i changed a few settings in released games with accessibility features built into windows 10, while some games work with them, others over ride them and revert back to the default in game setting and can't be altered by windows, i'm dyslexic and often have issues with black txt on a white background, so alter in games with a lot of txt to suit myself, same as camera angles and views, some give me a better access and enjoyment than default, so with most from both of the boards games i can alter at will for my own choice, but then again i don't play online, which can i'm told cause MP conflicts as you have edited a game system file in doing so, but as that's not a concern for me, isn't a issue either, for me anyway but for others it could be, as you get a game error or conflict causing a miss match as if your on a different version that the other player etc because of it.

Code: Select all

https://www.howtogeek.com/223319/how-to-manage-accessibility-features-in-windows-10/

nearly all versions of windows have the same sort of support, but not all games work with the options mind you, i do try and test for them in a given game i'm testing, but results are more for a personal choice rather than a pure case of helping out others, i'd advice others on which or what works with a given game, but as each user has a different issue or problem, one solutions doesn't suit all

For a dirty fix for this, open CORE/UI/HelpPopup.TXT (in the install folder) and go down to the [HelpPopupText] chunk. Change the COLOUR value to FF000000. Save and reload the game to see the difference.

For a more radical change, alter the change the FONT value to ConfirmText.

Thank you Iain. I will be most grateful for anything you can do. The problem is particularly vexing because the game looks and sounds so fantastic.

Thank you, Pip. This may be beyond my pathetic computer skills, but I will try it. I have it on Steam, so I suppose the game is somewhere in the Steam folder.

Thank you for your ideas, Zakblood.

My computer skills are truly pathetic, but It seems that those features do not work inside games, at least not at my low level of being able to use them. Windows magnifier can help, but it only works in some games, not all.

Unfortunately, it does not work in this one.

Goto your steam common folder in steam apps and find field of glory 2 there, then open the system directory and find font.txt

Now this won't change the color but it makes everything bigger if you use these numbers below. Pay special attention to Breifinginfo line and put a big number there. The briefing you see in the beige and yellow or whatever color that is will also be in the game when you press the briefing button and it's much clearer to read there. This is perfect for me cause I can't read that beige sht either. Just play with the numbers and nothing else. Hope this helps.

Hi Pip. With help, I tried both of the fixes you have suggested. They did increase the size of the letters and the box.
I was able to read the introductory comments, but needed the help of a magnifying glass to read the tutorial comments.

The problem is that the light grey lettering does not contrast well with the beige background.I hope this can be changed at a future time.

However, it is now possible for me to read the introductions and the tutorial instructions, with the help of the physical magnifier, something i could not do before implementing the changes you suggested, and I am grateful to you and the development team for this improvement.

I really appreciate the time and trouble you have gone to in providing this solution. I did try the fixes suggested by Pip first, as they were quicker to implement, and they have helped to the point where I can read even the tutorial messages with the help of a physical magnifier.

I do intend to try your solution at a later time, when I have some help from a friend who is much better with computers than I am. Thank you again for your help.

Can you post a screenshot of an example of text you are having trouble reading please. If size is the key issue (e.g. if you are running at a high rez on a small monitor) then running at a lower resolution might help.

As an alternative, you could open the FONT.TXT file as above and increase the sizes of the fonts - this might cause some oddness, but is the best way to make the text larger.

Cheers

Pip, aaatovsandmore gave a detailed list of how he adjusted the fonts above. I intend to try that.

Thanks again for your help.
