Very few women play computer wargames.

Post by Perturabo »

Actually, almost no one plays computer wargames.
I think it's usually either maniacs or people from military.

I wonder if any people in military tried to get women in military into computer wargames?

Not sure what you mean by computer war games. It's a broad genre and lots of people play.

I mean the ones that try to simulate something. Also in comparison to cRPGs or FPS shooters? I doubt.

Never personally met anyone who would be into tactical or operational wargames.

Had a group of people who played board games regularly years ago. Mostly the monster games. Also met with another bunch of table top gamers weekly. Computer gaming ended that for me plus board games are far too expensive now. I have not personally ever met, face to face, a female war gamer. I suppose they do exist. Probably in a different solar system or an alternate reality. [:D]

I have personally met hundreds or board war gamers and know of 3 women that play board or computer wargames. My last ASL tournament was in 2013 and there were over 100+ in attendance. There are even more computer war gamers out there.

This is a silly point of view.

Its like saying I have only met 5 other people in my lifetime who don't play war games and therefore there must be no such other types of gamers out there since I never personally met them.

You have now met me. I'm ex military, I'm female, and I'm a veteran wargamer.

If you visit board game geek, you can find more female wargamers too.

Obviously there are exceptions to the rule like your good self proves, but on the whole War et c doesn't appeal as much as it does to males.

It's every young Wargamers dream to find a partner into wargaming. I suppose like any hobby, makes things a lot easier if a couple share the same hobbies. Just, unlike say art or some such it's a lot harder to find a female into playing War😁. Well until it comes to the divorce...ahem...😇😁😉

One thing to contemplate is that some hobbies and communities are not very welcoming to women. Particularly hobbies like wargaming that can be a bit of a 'boy's clubhouse'. I think there's a tendency for women just not to reveal themselves either, even in forums like this, so that they can be taken seriously by the content they post, aren't the forums 'token woman', and they don't have to put up with patronizing or creepy behavior.

Understandable points.

I WILL say though, one of this forum's males was quite unexpectedly quite generous when they bought me Strategic Command 3 just because I asked politely :)

Most war gamer's (at least those that came from the old board war game field from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s) are really rather nice and not a bad lot, most of us war gamer's are at least in their 40s and a lot in the 50-60s and some still surviving are in their 70's.

I can't speak for any of the 20-30's I don't even think those types knows what a war game is, most would say oh yeah Medal of Honor or Halo or some other FPS" but those are not what I would call war games. Just shooters. Also the Fantasy General and Wizards and what not are not war games either, they may have strategy in them but there not war games int he traditional sense.

Don't forget the late, great Rhonda Brown, avid war gamer (especially JTS Civil War Battles) and active Forum contributor, who died a few years back. May she RIP.

Also what's her name (?) who played (still?) WITP:AE.

Grafin Zeppelin chimes in on the WITP:AE forum occasionally, but she's the only one I know of on that forum. The OP is more or less correct: There are very few women who get into wargaming. I certainly never expected to find a partner who was into the pastime, and I didn't. My wife will never give me an attaboy if I take out half the Kido Butai, and I'm OK with that.

I'm 38 years old and I started with computer war games. My first serious computer war game might have been Empire Deluxe (MS-DOS version), followed by Steel Panthers when it was new. I didn't get into analog war games until 2008 or so with BattleTech first, then Warhammer 40,000 some years later. I believe younger folks than me play Warhammer games (both 40k and Fantasy Battles), X-Wing Miniatures Game, and the likes

You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

I know quite a few that play Squad, Day Z and Insurgency Sandstorm. And you know what, they will kick your booty on the field any day! Get over all this "alpha" talk! Women can do and will do anything now days, and most guys just droole over that. I just love to see women do things great, that only men were good at...
