[Logged] Only flight leader obeying manual altitude and throttle settings during engage offensive

Post by boogabooga »

In the attached scenario, the "Knight Flight" group was selected and given orders for 1000 ft ASL and mil power. However, only the group leader "Knight #1" is complying with the order; wingmen are remaining at 36000 ft.

I've seen this a lot as well. The flight leader will obey manual "cruise" GROUP setting but his wingman, in the same group, remains at afterburner and ends up a hundred miles ahead.

I've seen it before as well, seem to be when using f1-auto engagement logic with no plotted course, as without out it getting involved they obey, why I try to avoid using it.

If it helps in the test scene:

0. select group, move the group back from the target a bit to the southwest over the hills to give some time for the rest to play out.
1. UN-engage the group from all targets (and check ind level to make sure they took it).
2. Toggle the speed\alt again on the group, may have to toggle speed twice for them to actually take new setting (say loiter\2k).
3. Let it play for a few seconds (switch to single view 'v'), You should now see the other 3 now start flying down to the setting let them get there (or close).
4. To avoid any weirdness getting in the way, set the ignore bingo\ignore fuelstate and weapon state to winchester-mission specific.
5. Then manually alloc assign the target2 and plot the course over target2, no problems they all do as told.

Reload scene, do 0-4
5 plot a course over target2, f1 auto engage target2, #1-4 continue to obey prior speed and alt settings.

Reload scene, do 0-4
5 do not plot a course over target2 , f1 auto engage target2.
#2-4 don't listen and immediately start climbing to 36k and goto military power, #1 follows prior instructions for alt and speed.

For me, the problem happens with flight groups in AAW Patrol missions. Let's say there are two flights of two airborne when a bogey violates their prosecution zone, but one of my flights is way closer than the other and I want them to wait. I select that flight and press F2 to open the throttle/altitude controls. I change the throttle to loiter so that the other flight can catch up to help engage. The problem is that only the flight leader respects the loiter setting, even though it is a GROUP setting, not a UNIT setting. The wingman of that flight remains at afterburner and prosecutes the bogey alone 100 miles ahead of his wingman, and 200 miles ahead of the other flight.

How do you get a unit to follow a path with manual throttle settings if its on a patrol mission?

You don't. I'm saying that I have four aircraft between two flights that are engaging offensive, but one of the flights is way out ahead of the other and I want them to slow down to let the other flight close the distance. I do this frequently when my aircraft are engaging equivalent or superior foes to improve survivability.

You don't.
You can, they should listen till they auto-engage.
You can work around this when they do get auto-engaged by telling it to not ignore plotted path, and plotting the course even while on a patrol mission it should\usually listens (after you unengage, plot and then re-engage), least until the path end and another engagement doesn't immediately follow. Not sure if I'm explaining that right.

To your original description, glad you pointed that out. I think again the auto-engagement without a defined path factor would be coming into play there. The above is how i attempt to fight against it once I notice whats going on. It could be simply the auto-engage process is lacking a step to apply group settings to group members vs just the lead in these situations where there is not path, or it could be more way more complicated logic going on, have to see what the investigation finds I guess.
